MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF

WORLD COMMUNICATIONS CHARTER SCHOOL

January 14, 2014 at 5:30 p.m.

The regularly scheduled Board meeting for January 14, 2014 10, 2013, was rescheduled to December 12, 2013. The meeting was called to order by Board President Victoria Rivers. In attendance were Board President Rivers, Board Treasurer Barnes, Board member Hodges, Principal Janet Middleton, Assistant Principals Vincent Gravina and Marlene Walker, Business Manager Leah Session-Aikens, Dean of Students, Kahlef Webb, Instructional Coach Noah Wager, Athletic Director, Marcus Bazemore, IT Technician David Tidey, Caitlin Nelson, Teacher, Alan Wohlstetter, Counsel, Rachel Waszkewitz a fellow from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Cristina Alvarez from Design-Lab Schools, and James Cella from OmniVest Management.

The November, 2013 meeting minutes, November, 2013 financial report and FY 20013 audit report were approved in an executive session.

Administrative team
Dr. Cristine Alvarez was ratified as interim CEO.

·  73 SPED – 7 attend Saint Katherine’s, 1 is in a behavioral program

·  Keystone exams will finish Friday

·  Middle school students will take benchmarks

·  Midterms at the end of the month

Vincent Gravina
Mr. Gravina introduced the iPad program. Instruction is iPad driven. Students are encouraged to do the right thing. With great power comes great responsibility
Noah Wager

Mr. Wager Is the math instructional coach, which allows him to work with our math department on instructional and classroom management strategies. He also does quick visit observations of the whole staff to provide praises and prompts to elevate the level of instruction across the school. Additionally, I teach one section of keystone algebra. JoAnn Moore is the Literacy Coach.

Marcus Bazemore

Mr. Bazemore is the Data Manager and Athletic Director.

Caitlin Nelson

Ms. Nelson is a middle School Geography teacher.

Kahlef Webb

Mr. Webb is the Dean of Students.

David Tidey

Mr. Tidey is the Information Systems Technician.

Leah Session-Aikens

Ms. Session-Aikens is the Business Manager.

Jerry Brown

Mr. Brown is the Facilities Manager.
Rachel Waszkewitz
Ms. Waszkewitz is a University of Pennsylvania, Wharton Fellow, who is working on building a parent organization. Applications went out in November, 2013. Thanks to Ms. Burgess for attending the meeting this evening. Ms. Waszkewitz is working with the Philadelphia Home and School council.
Mary Mazza - Exude
Ms. Mazza gave a brief description of the services her company offers. She is currently working on a Human Resources assessment of the school. She is focusing on minimizing risk, insuring compliance, developing and implementing policies, onboarding, off boarding, and safety.

Handbook - The first draft of the employee handbook will be distributed to staff that will provide Ms. Rivers with feedback. The handbook will then be sent to Mr. Wohlstetter, counsel for a legal review.

Healthcare.Gov - Marketplace payments are due the 15th but payments are not being accepted. Ms. Mazza will continue to work with employees who have signed up.
Teach for America - Erin Murphy
Ms. murphy presented the results of our partnership last summer.

·  Coordinated summer training institute.

·  400 students took courses at World Communications Charter School.

·  Benefit

o  Professional development and a learning atmosphere.

o  There are opportunities for summer mentor teacher programs for existing staff.

o  She reviewed what is required for summer program.

Chief Executive Officer Search

Carney, Sandoe and Associates presented their CEO search procedures. They look for senior level administrators. The process will include all the background work and will take about six months. The process will include getting information out to individuals, networking and communicating the Board of Directors and Search Chairman. A 100 day follow-up will also take place to determine how the match went. A motion to hire the firm to begin the process was made. The board also moved to accept the preliminary contract. Packets for the board have been made available. Internal and external candidates will be considered.
Potential Board Members

Board President Rivers asked that out guests review the job description and application. She will follow up this week. Please contact Ms. Waszkewitz if you would like to visit. Potential board members are also asked to include their resumes. Board orientations training and onboarding will be scheduled at a later date.

Dr. Cristina Alvarez shared her vision. She also thanked everyone for the time. Staff was thanked for attending the meeting, as well.

Board President, Rivers gave a charge to the potential board members.
Information Technology Contracts

A motion was made and approved to use Leones Comp for our IT needs. The proposal is for immediate service. The invoices have been approved.


A contract is needed for Dr. Alvarez before we notify the school district of our change in leadership.
Leon's $140.00 invoice approved.
Kudos to the board members from Dr. Alvarez for their many hours of service.
