MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING

OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IROQUOIS WEST UNIT DISTRICT NUMBER 10
March 26, 2007 – 7:00pm

CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL

President Jon Goldenstein called the Board of Education of the Iroquois West District Number 10, Iroquois County, Illinois to order in Regular Session on March 26, 2007 at the Iroquois West High School in Gilman, Illinois. The following officers and members of the Board of Education were present: Jon Goldenstein, President, Dan Mushrush, Vice President, Rodger Bennett, Brian DuFrain, Chet Wade, and David Zachgo. Harold Wilken, Secretary, arrived late at 7:20pm.

A quorum of the members of the Board being present the President called the meeting to order at 7:06pm and declared the Board to be in session for the transaction of business.

APPROVE MINUTES
Dan Mushrush made a motion to approve the “open session” minutes for the regular meeting of February 20, 2007 as presented; Chet Wade seconded it. Roll Call Vote: Jon Goldenstein – Yea, Rodger Bennett – Yea, Brian DuFrain – Yea, Danny Mushrush – Yea, Chet Wade – Yea, David Zachgo - Yea. The motion carried, 6-0.
Rodger Bennett made a motion to approve the “executive session” minutes for the regular meeting of February 20, 2007 as presented; Dave Zachgo seconded it. Roll Call Vote: Jon Goldenstein – Yea, Rodger Bennett – Yea, Brian DuFrain – Yea, Danny Mushrush – Yea, Chet Wade – Yea, David Zachgo - Yea. The motion carried, 6-0.

FINANCIAL REPORTS
Dave Zachgo made a motion to approve all financial reports, authorize payment of bills and payroll as presented totaling $464,722.96 and to reimburse the imprest fund for $237.28; Chet Wade seconded. Roll Call Vote: Jon Goldenstein – Yea, Rodger Bennett – Yea, Brian DuFrain – Yea, Danny Mushrush – Yea, Chet Wade – Yea, David Zachgo - Yea. The motion carried, 6-0.

At this point, Harold and Sandy Wilken entered the meeting.

Brenda Muench gave an enthusiastic technology presentation on the use of podcasts in her classrooms.

COMMUNICATIONS REPORTS

Correspondence
Superintendent Larry Eyre shared the following communiqués with the Board:

Board Committee Reports
The Building and Grounds Committee will meet on March 28th at 6:30pm at GES.

Special Education
Chet Wade represented Iroquois West at the Board of Director’s meeting on March 8th. The additional space at the Central Office is greatly appreciated.

Curriculum Reports
The SIP (School Improvement Planning) committee will meet on April 11th at 6:30pm in the HS cafeteria. Mrs. Peters reported 28 computers have been installed in the GES for the new computer lab.

Administrative Reports
Hawkins – Kyle White was chosen 1st team, SVC All Conference. The HS musical will be March 29, 30 & 31 at 7:30pm. Thanked the area scat team and high school staff for assisting during the recent crisis.

Killus – Nothing to add.

Peters – Nothing to add.

Keigher – Absent

Eyre – Nothing to add.

Lawn Mowing Contracts

Rodger Bennett made a motion to award mowing contracts to Hall’s Lawn & Garden (Dave Hall) for HS football field & perimeter ($36) and IWMS grounds ($42); Yardvarks (Paul Schroeder) for IWHS grounds ($41) and IWGS ($40); and Guillermo Mejia for IWUES ($68) and IWDES ($45) for 2007; Brian DuFrain seconded it. Roll Call Vote: Jon Goldenstein – Yea, Rodger Bennett – Yea, Brian DuFrain – Yea, Danny Mushrush – Yea, Chet Wade – Yea, Harold Wilken – Yea, David Zachgo - Yea. The motion carried, 7-0.

Bus Contract

Brian DuFrain made a motion to purchase a 2008 IC School Bus from Midwest Transit Equipment for $76,936 plus $1171 for the listed options; trade-in credit, if elected, would be $8,000; Rodger Bennett seconded it. Psychology Intern

Harold Wilken made a motion to employ Kimberly Morris as a psychology intern for the period of August 1, 2007 through July 31, 2008 upon fulfillment of standard hiring requirements and in accordance with our Interagency Agreement; Dave Zachgo seconded it. NEW BUSINESS

Schedule Public Hearing

Rodger Bennett made a motion to schedule public hearings for a waiver of state mandated holidays, and for a waiver of the Administrative Cost Cap at 7:15pm on Monday, April 16th, immediately preceding our April meeting in the Upper Elementary School cafeteria in Thawville; Dan Mushrush seconded it. Roll Call Vote: Rodger Bennett – Yea, Brian DuFrain – Yea, Jon Goldenstein – Yea, Danny Mushrush – Yea, Chet Wade – Yea, Harold Wilken – Yea, David Zachgo - Yea. The motion carried, 7-0.

Set Registration Dates

Dan Mushrush made a motion to schedule fall registration in the high school gym from noon to 8:00pm on Wednesday, August 8th; Harold Wilken seconded it. Rodger Bennett made a motion to set Friday, May 25th at 7:00pm for MS graduation and Sunday, May 27th at 2:30pm for HS graduation; Brian DuFrain seconded it. Recognition of Newly Tenured Teachers

Rodger Bennett made a motion to recognize as newly tenured teachers: Christy Decker, Duane Ehmen, Kelly Ficklin, Megan Wilken and Mary Peters; Brian DuFrain seconded it. Cash Contributions and Gifts

Rodger Bennett made a motion to accept and thank Denny’s Sporting Goods for a $400 Leg Press and a $400 Toe Raiser; Brian DuFrain seconded it. Executive Session
Brian DuFrain made a motion to go into Executive Session at 8:24pm for the following reasons: 1) The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint logged against an employee to determine its validity; Dave Zachgo seconded it. Resignation

Brian DuFrain made a motion to accept the resignation of Ryan Pearson as a certified district employee and head football coach; Harold Wilken seconded it. Roll Call Vote: Rodger Bennett – Yea, Brian DuFrain – Yea, Jon Goldenstein – Yea, Danny Mushrush – Yea, Chet Wade – Yea, Harold Wilken – Yea, David Zachgo - Yea. The motion carried, 7-0.

Retirement

Dan Mushrush made a motion to accept a letter of retirement from Barb Frobish, effective at the conclusion of the 2006-2007 school year; Brian DuFrain seconded it. Hire Principals and Set Salaries

Harold Wilken made a motion to employ Mary Peters and Kim Hawkins as principals for 2007-2008 with a salary increase of 6.0%; Chet Wade seconded it. Roll Call Vote: Rodger Bennett – Yea, Brian DuFrain – Yea, Jon Goldenstein – Yea, Danny Mushrush – Yea, Chet Wade – Yea, Harold Wilken – Yea, David Zachgo - Yea. The motion carried, 7-0.

The next Strategic Planning Committee will be on May 3rd at 7:00pm at the Middle School.
