  1. Feedback SAS Tutor Development Day – 17 May 2011

Feedback from the day had been very positive and useful. Generally felt to be a positive experience; possibly more effective than a short meeting in order to carry forward new actions. The Development Day was particularly good for networking and the short meetings are a good way of sharing information. The centralisation of courses was felt to be an excellent idea. Collated evaluation will be sent to Tutors when available. Another meetingis planned for the autumn; members decided to turn the short meeting planned for 17 November 2011 into another full development day. It was also decided at the Tutor Development Day to hold an Extraordinary SAS Meeting and this was scheduled for 6 July at Woodhaven. Co-ordinated training would be discussed and dates set. JG and AA gave their apologies for this day.

  1. Update on SAS Doctor Regional Day – 1 July 2011

RP made apology for the fact that communication with SAS doctors had been difficult as the lists held by our IT department are incomplete. However 40 people are now confirmed to attend and this was considered enough to go ahead with the day. May run the day again in the future.

  1. Progress Report on Coaching Course planning

RP had organized a 4 day coaching and mentoring course facilitated by Julia Pekora, costing £8,000 - £10,000. RP is in the process of thinking about selection criteria. There are 15 places available and RP wishes to select from across the region and needs to devise a selection process. Those wishing to take part should be aware that it would require an ongoing commitment to mentoring. If SAS Tutors are not able to take part then RP asked them to think about people in the Trust who may be suitable. The course will run on 14/15 November and 12/13 December 2011. RS had already attended the course and highly recommended it.

Members asked about the amount of time that would be needed for mentoring after the courses had been completed. RP thought between 50 – 100 hours per year. The group of doctors to be mentored at this time are SAS doctors, with a possibility to link into other groups at a later date.

  1. SAS Tutor Appraisals

RP had now held 5 SAS Tutor Appraisal meetings so far which had proved very useful. RP to set up meeting with RS and telephone conversation with PS. Action RP/JW

  1. Feedback from Trusts

Dorset Healthcare

  • MS reported that a bi-annual meeting with the Medical Director had been reinstated.
  • Recent conflict resolution training was well-received.
  • Peer groups are up and running.
  • Dorset Healthcare is being merged with West Dorset (which is part of Severn Deanery). Unclear at present how things will work.

Dorset County

No representative present.

Isle of Wight

  • 20 people booked and attended recent course.
  • Good relationship with Medical Director who is very positive and proactive.
  • IOW very happy to co-ordinate with other regions regarding courses in future.
  • 1 day coroner course held in January – very successful; 19 people attended; very interactive session; good Q & A.
  • Hoping to arrange 1 day team-building activity. Agreed to discuss at SAS meeting on 6 July 2011.

Jersey

PS reported from Jersey, who are not part of the NHS. There are 60 SAS Doctors in Jersey. PS will work closely with the Clinical Director. Discussed the need to have SAS specific development. Currently in the process of developing new appraisal. PS does drop-in sessions Tuesday afternoons. Will try to get another person on board – 1 P.A.

Poole

  • Held Human Factors Training. Positively received but attendance was poor.
  • Evening ‘any questions’ event with Kathy Taylor from the BMA and the head of HR locally had been held. Another is planned in 6 months with the revalidation lead.
  • PJ and JG will arrange a meeting with the Medical Director to try to put into place a rolling half day and to discuss future plans.

Portsmouth

No representative present.

Southampton

  • AA reported on a half rolling day (9.00am – 12.30pm) held on 9 June 2011 at the Heartbeat Suite for the development of all staffing within the organisation. MD stresses obligation for everyone to attend as part of clinical commitment so no need for study leave. Attendance 70% and considered very successful.
  • Wagih Moussa had invited Professor Michael West to give a talk re team-working/patient safety in day to day working environment. Talk was very interactive and very well received. Professor West was a brilliant speaker; very motivational and inspiring.
  • John Stubbing had given a talk regarding the state of play re appraisal and enlightenment regarding what is coming in the next year.
  • 1:1 meetings occur with Wagih for SAS doctors. 27 out of 48 SAS Doctors have had these meetings; doctors need to be motivated.
  • Online survey organized for anyone who has had 1:1 meeting. Response so far about 30 out of 48. Some issues with job satisfaction had been raised and this information had been fed back to the Medical Director. Other issues raised: concerns re job plans; issues re lack of appraisal; specialty related courses; SAS mandatory courses – tie into threshold requirements?; awareness of GPs of SAS Doctors.

AA to send questionnaire to JW to disseminate to SAS Tutors. Action AA/JW

  • AA had looked at leadership in general – at MIAD and Medicology. May have one course from each to complement leadership and management. Adel met with MIAD recently – cost £35 per doctor for registration online for masterclass for registered individuals. MIAD are more focused on leadership style. JG mentioned that some people have had poor experiences with MIAD’s e-learning. There have been some issues with incompatibility of software. AA had been assured that there is support online and by phone but agreed that he would need to be convinced that it would work before going ahead. RP offered to speak to Don Strange to discuss a final price. AA would send an email with a breakdown of costs.
