Minutes for Faculty Meeting

November 2, 2007

In Attendance:

All faculty members were present. Advisors for the College of Business were also at the meeting.

Undergraduate Curriculum Committee Recommendations for changes to the CoB core:

Dr. Stan Eakins presided over this portion of the meeting. A summary of undergraduate curriculum revisions was distributed to faculty. Below is a list of items discussed:

  1. Adoption of a Focus company
  2. Strategy First (BUSI 1200 – 3 hr course) – Freshman year – pre/co-requisite for Acct 2401
  3. Leadership 1 (BUSI 2200 – 3 hr course) – Sophomore year or first term at ECU if transfer
  4. Leadership 2 (BUSI 3200 – 2 hr course) – Junior year or first term at ECU if transfer
  5. Leadership 3 (BUSI 4200 – 1 hr course) – Senior year
  6. Professional Development and Leadership Portfolio – (0 hr) – introduced to freshman and completed prior to graduation
  7. 60 hour rule no longer in standards. Program would consist of 123 hours.

Supporting Initiatives

  1. Communications Center
  2. Advising Changes
  1. Business advisors being moved to CoB
  2. Exploring concept of faculty leadership mentors to help students with portfolio

Focus Company

Faculty discussed idea of adopting company to focus on through curriculum. Possibly, company would send executives to interact with students for different classes. Companies would be reviewed by faculty advisory committee.

The scale for this program is tremendous. No other school is doing this program at this level.

Committee Reports

Online Steering – votes passed for online peer review

OMGT 6123 – faculty voted and passed making OMGT 6123 a prerequisite for FINA 6144 (Financial Management I). Change will be put in catalog.

A motion was made, seconded and passed by faculty to mandate that students have a statistics course at the undergraduate level before waiving out of FINA 6144. Len Rhodes will get changes put in catalog.

Insurance Concentration

Members on insurance concentration committee: Scott Below, Kaysia Campbell, James Holloway, Charmaine Glegg, and Wanda Naylor. Curriculum will be finalized by February, 2008.

Financial Services Concentration

Insurance Concentration may necessitate changes to Financial Services concentration. Faculty discussed altering course work in concentration. This will be revisited at next faculty meeting.

Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan Text Review for Undergrads

Faculty discussed changing book being used to teach FINA 3724 (Financial Management). Need to try to reduce cost of textbooks for students. A committee was formed to explore possibilities and review text. Scott will attend meeting.

Hiring Update

Oneil Harris has accepted a faculty position to begin in Fall, 2008.

Possibly, Deon Strickland, will be coming for a campus visit. No positions are available for Finance at this time. This would be a special circumstance; his wife would be interviewing as an instructor at the Brody School of Medicine.
