Senior Day at the Legislature

  • Senior Day at the Legislature will be February 10, 2016. This is a great opportunity to talk with local legislatures about funding needs for caregivers and other programs in our area. The funding requests for this session include the addition of the one-time allocation for the National Caregiver Program and meals to become a permanent part of the budget. If this is not approved, we will lose that funding. We will also sponsor a break session for the House, where we can provide a snack and discuss what our programs provide. Infograms with updated information will be sent to Council. If you would like to attend, please contact Tracy.
  • Ms. Sharon Ott has been appointed to the State Aging Advisory Board.

Report from the Alzheimer’s Association

Ms. Heather Cox reported that about 200 people participated in the annual Alzheimer’s Walk and that funds received exceeded their expectations.

Report from the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Society

  • Ms. Luann Lundquist reported on the three fundraisers that have been held for the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Society included a walk, motorcycle run, golf event with Mr. Mike Malaska.
  • After the first of the year they will be working on a name change, because of the confusion between them and the Alzheimer’s Association - “Memory Matters”. There will be a change in mission statement - to help reduce isolation, provide activities and education, and programs. They will also have a new logo.
  • The St. George Center Activity group meets three times per week and is growing.
  • Ms. Lundquist reported that they are looking at opening an adult day care facility with grant/funding.

Five County Programs

  • RCI REACH (Over View) The new program is going well. A copy of the Caregiver training guide was given to council members to review. This book is used by the RCI trainers in the 12-week program for caregivers. This guide may be purchased on-line from the Roslyn Carter Institute.
  • Caregiver Audit – the yearly program audit was completed with Ms. Nancy Madsen, State Program Director. The audit went well. There are a few changes and requests from Ms. Madsen: (1) caregivers can only participate in this program once; (2) each month the caregiver should be receiving training/information for their case manager; and (3) an added push toward education and training for the caregiver.
  • Veterans Case Management Services – Five County is now participating in the Veterans In-Home Program. Referrals are sent to the VA and coordinated with Julie Larsen. With approval from the VA, the case manager from Five County will help to coordinate their services. Ms. Megan McCourt will be the contact at the Five County office. Ms. Janeil Esplin has completed her TRIIP training and is waiting for certification from the Veterans Administration to be a Veterans Service Office. She can help Veterans with applying for services and provide community resources, etc. Ms. McCourt will be completing this training, also. Any Veteran should call the Five County office and talk with either Ms. Esplin or Ms. McCourt for these programs.
