WRITING
KEY OBJECTIVES
A Year 6 writer can consistently and securely :-
Composition and Text Structure
Plan their writing:
write to suit the audience and purpose
note and develop initial ideas, drawing on reading and research where necessary
in writing narratives, consider how authors have developed characters and settings in what pupils have read, listened to or seen performed
Draft and write:
select appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how choices can change and enhance meaning
in narratives, describe settings, characters and atmosphere
integrate dialogue to convey character
integrate dialogue to advance the action
précis longer passages
group ideas into paragraphs to show different information or events
use a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs eg conjunctions, adverbials (see Y5 list), pronouns or dialogue
use further organisational and presentational devices eg sub-headings, bullet points, underlining
Evaluate and edit:
assess the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing
propose changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning
ensure the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing
ensure correct verb and subject agreement
distinguish between the language of speech and writing and choose the correct register
proof-read for spelling and punctuation errors
Performance:
perform their own compositions
use appropriate intonation and volume so meaning is clear
use movement to enhance meaning
Vocabulary and Grammar
extend the range of structures that are appropriate for the style of writing, including subjunctive forms (e.g. I suggest that he study)
use adverbs to indicate a degree of possibility
use modal verbs to indicate a degree of possibility
use relative clauses (drop-in)
manipulate sentences to create particular effects
use ISPACE openers
use devices to build cohesion between paragraphs in persuasive / explanatory texts eg on the other hand, the opposing view, similarly, in contrast, although, additionally, another possibility, alternatively, as a consequence
use devices to build cohesion between paragraphs in narrative eg in the meantime, meanwhile, in due course, until then
explore and investigate active and passive
use the passive voice in writing
write sentences that are grammatically accurate
use expanded noun phrases to convey complicated information concisely
identify the subject and object of a sentence
Punctuation
use a wider range of punctuation correctly :
use colons
use semi-colons in extended lists
use semi-colons to mark the boundary between independent clauses eg It is raining;I am fed up
use ellipsis to link ideas between paragraphs
explore how hyphens can be used to avoid ambiguity eg man eating shark versus man-eating shark
punctuate bullet points consistently
Handwriting
write neatly, fluently and legibly (e.g. ascenders and descenders are parallel)
choose the style of handwriting that is best suited for a task
choose the writing implement that is best suited for a task (eg quick notes, letters etc)

Be secure with all spelling rules previously taught
Spell with automaticity
Use a number of different strategies interactively in order to spell correctly
spell the commonly mis-spelt words from the Y5/6 word list.
use a dictionary to check spelling and meaning
use a thesaurus
