Curriculum Circle Meeting Minutes

April 5th, 2012 3:30pm-5:00pm

SDS Conference Room

In Attendance: Amy LaZerte, Katie Barndt, Heidi Leonard, Christy Nordstrom, Tracy Furutani, Alice Melling, Toni Anderson

·  Introduction Question: What book are you reading right now?

·  Christian Update

·  Open Discussion/ Brainstorming: Developing New Partnerships for Service Learning

o  Heidi will be doing the leg work to develop partnerships for us.

§  Tracy suggests Jay Thomas Rankin- WTIA- place to start for Heidi

·  Group of companies that are interested in generating business through sustainability

§  Building relationships is critical! Toni has some support now that helps build that support.

·  Being plugged into chambers around the city is a good way to network. Toni has an employee named Sandy who has an existing relationship with these chambers and is able to facilitate relationships.

·  There are a handful of companies who will repeatedly take interns from NSCC

§  Clarity about what business owners’ and NSCC expectations is important

§  Encouraging employers to see the value in taking on interns. Exploring avenues, making new connections, exploring pathways via internships.

§  Even if the cert doesn’t run in the near future, it’s valuable to pursue relationships these relationships. The Sustainability Office can introduce potential interns to organizations.

·  Who’s our audience? Academic students, and also some prof tech

·  ISSP members- consultants hanging out their shingle, some think there may be a job out there for them as a “Sustainability Champion” within an organization.

§  What kind of geographic boundaries do we have? King County? Western Washington?

·  Western Washington was suggested.

o  Campus Wide Civic Engagement

§  Next years’ theme is civic engagement, Pete and Mary Ellen may have more information on this.

§  There is a service learning class on the books here at NSCC.

§  It would be grand to have someone paid to manage service learning opportunities and relationships with organizations.

§  Students in four year programs, and even other programs on campus, are placed with companies. It would be best if we can mimic that model as an institution.

§  Traci points out that the NSCC “model” for maintaining a service learning component with a program or organization is to turn it into a class.

·  Assign New Action Items

o  Toni and Heidi to connect with Sandy to discus tactics

o  Katie to talk to Pete about Civic Engagement

o  Christy to send Heidi contact information.

o  Tracy to find name for Homewaters contact for Heidi.

o  Toni to get Heidi contact info for the Green Fest in Shoreline and a green architecture firm in West Seattle.

·  Schedule next meeting:

o  Next meeting is scheduled for April 12th, from 3:30-5:00pm in the College Center Conference Room. The focus will be learning outcomes.
