INTRODUCTION

Kentucky coal production for 1996 was 157,674,605 tons which was 528,963 tons more than the previous year. In 1996, Kentucky mined 59,193,320 tons of coal by surface operations while 98,479,285 tons were mined underground.

The coal industry furnished direct employment for 21,827 miners. Twelve were killed in Kentucky coal mine accidents in 1996 which was up from eleven fatalities in the previous year.

In July, 1996, the clay mining industry ceased to be regulated by the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals.
