Period: 1

DAY / LESSON TOPIC / OBJECTIVES
SWBAT… / ACTIVITIES/MATERIALS / EVALUATION
Monday / Classroom Rules and Procedures / Identify classroom rules and procedures and illustrate , through words, when the rules and procedures have been followed or broken / Before class begins
  • As students walk into the classroom, teacher greets each student and hand them a seat assignment card. Teacher instructs students to take their seats and read the directions on the front board to begin their work.
Once the bell rings
  • Obtain the class’ attention and show them where the momentum for the day is written. Explain to the students that the paper they see on their desks is their Momentum sheet. Each day, students will copy down the objective from the TV monitor and will record their answer for their momentum question on the sheet. Once they have filled in the information, they will put their momentum sheet in their class notebooks (which we will set up later in the week). Instruct students they they will have 30 seconds to put away their momentum sheets once I say “go.” Give out a couple of pieces of candy to those who do so quietly.
  • Distribute the student information sheet. Tell students that once the timer is started, they will have 10 minutes to complete the task. At the end of 10 minutes, call time and obtain the students’ attention. Give them 30 seconds to pass up their papers. Praise the first row who finishes – give out opportunity passes. Explain how opportunity passes work – where to put them, when to put them in envelopes, etc.
  • Distribute punish worksheets. Instruct students to take out a sheet of paper and copy the punish work assignment. Instruct students that they will have 10 minutes to complete the task. At the end of 10 minutes, instruct students to pass papers who the teacher says “go.” Like before, students will have 30 seconds to pass up papers. First row to finish will receive opportunity passes. Once all papers are collected, rip them up. Instruct students that punish work is a waste of time and that this should be the only time that they should have to copy the paper. Tell students that now we will be learning about the rules, consequences, and rewards of this classroom.
  • Pass out a piece of colored construction paper to each student. Instruct the students to write their name in the upper right-hand corner of the paper. Explain to students how to fold their paper – make a grid of 9 squares. Number the squares 1-9 beginning with the top left. Once they have folded their paper, have the student sitting to the right of the student check to make sure they have labeled their paper with their name and that they have folded it correctly. Initial your partner’s paper. Thank that person.
  • Take volunteers to read each of the rules aloud. Have students copy each rule in one of the boxes across the top. Model this by drawing it on the board for students to see.
  • Under each of the rules, in boxes 4-6, draw T-charts. Give students about 30 seconds to think about what each rule would look like, sound like. Take volunteers for responses. Have students record responses on their T-charts.
  • In box 7 students should copy down the consequences for our classroom. Have a student read them aloud to the class
  • In box 8, have the students copy down the rewards for our classroom. Have a student read them aloud to the class.
  • In box 9, write a sentence explaining why these rules are important for our classroom. Share sentences.
  • Remind students to hold on to these papers – there will be a test on the rules and procedures of our classroom at the end of the week!
At the end of class
  • Thank students for their attention during class. Show them the “Best Dressed” board. Explain to students that if they meet 9 out of the 10 items on the checklist, they will receive 3 best dressed points. If they meet 7 out of 10, they will receive 1 best dressed point. By the end of 6 weeks, any class with over 50 points will receive a free day. Take students through the points and assign them if needed. Remind the students that they need to have their supplies by Wednesday. Extra materials will be available for purchase if students need them. Instruct students to stay seated until they are dismissed by the teacher.
