Role and Context
Job Purpose /
  • To supervise pupils under the direction of the Head Teacher/ Senior teacher
  • To ensure the safety and well-being of pupils and the adherence with school procedures while in the school playground and grounds, the dining room, classrooms and other areas during lunch times
  • To prepare the hall for school lunches and clear away afterwards
  • To supervise pupils before, during and after dining sessions
  • To work within a team in all aspects of the lunchtime provision
  • To adhere to the school policy for conduct and confidentiality
  • To complete first aid training and for this to be kept current (training provided by the school)
  • May be required to perform adhoc roles within the scope of the job.

Context / Pastoral care
Principal Responsibilities
  • Prepare the layout of the tables and chairs in preparation for lunch
  • Supervise the pupils when they are in the dining room eating lunch:
Ensure a good atmosphere is maintained
Assist younger children where necessary including cutting food or carrying trays
Encourage good table manners and eating habits
Help to instruct in the correct use of cutlery
Mop up spillages
Ensure a safe and ordered environment is maintained at all times
Check every child has eaten the majority of their meal
  • Supervise pupils on the playground and field:
There must always be appropriate staff cover when children are on the playground or field and one person supervising the climbing equipment at all times
Ensure the safety and good behaviour of the children
  • Supervise pupils in class areas when weather is inclement
  • Supervise movement of pupils to and from dining room in order to ensure the safety and well-being of all pupils
  • Administer basic first aid and record any incident when required
  • Clear up the dining room after the lunch on a rota basis. Daily tasks include:
clearing any food/ wrappings left on tables
wiping tables
sweeping/ wet spot-mopping the floor
checking chairs are clean
supervising the stacking of dining chairs (Year 6 only)
emptying bins
clear away tables
ensuring hatch area is clean
During the lunch hour, the roles of each MSA will be completed on a rota basis.
Person specification
Qualifications / None required
Experience / Experience of working in an environment where there are children and young people is desirable but not necessary
Skills/ Knowledge /
  1. Empathy with children
  2. Able to exert authority and give direction/ instruction in a confident and appropriate manner
  3. Able to communicate with adults and children
  4. Knowledge of school standards and procedures
  5. Knowledge of health and safety regulations within a school environment
  6. Awareness of how to obtain information on children’s allergies or asthma etc and how to use an epipen if necessary
  7. Flexibility and a willingness to adapt roles and tasks in line with the needs of the school
  8. Approachability in order that children feel they can share anxieties and problems during the lunch hour

Problems and Decisions
  • Midday supervisors are responsible for monitoring and supervising all activities that happen during the lunch break
  • Any persistent troublesome behaviour from pupils at lunch times should be reported to the liaison SMS who will pass on concerns to the Head Teacher. These will be recorded in a behaviour book
  • Occasionally a child may feel unwell during lunch and need help. This is reported to the Head Teacher if necessary
  • In the event of a toileting accident, MSAs are responsible for supporting children to change and for informing the class teacher at the end of lunch

Expectations/ Training
  • All MSAs are expected to keep up to date with basic first aid training
  • All MSAs are expected to attend school Safeguarding training in line with other staff
  • All MSAs are expected to attend basic health and safety training in line with other staff
  • All MSAs are expected to attend training on the use of Epipens if necessary
  • All MSAs are required to attend whole staff training regarding school procedures and ethos
  • All MSAs should receive guidance on the lifting and moving of equipment

General Information
