ASSISTANT PREMISES OFFICER

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:Assistant Premises Officer (part time)

Grade:Scale 3, spine points 15-17

Responsible to:Premises Manager

Premises Committee

Terms of Contract:Temporary for one year(following successful probation) to be reviewed

Main Purpose of Job:

The Assistant Premises Officer is responsible to the Premises Manager and to the Headteacher, for the general upkeep of the School premises and in providing a safe, secure, clean and warm environment for all site users and visitors. To deputise for the Premises Officer in his/her absence as agreed.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Security

1.1.Opening and locking of gates, doors and windows as appropriate.

1.2.Taking reasonable steps to minimise loss or damage to property and staff.

1.3.Patrolling the site at appropriate intervals.

1.4.Ensuring that intruders are dealt with adequately in accordance with the school’s practice and where necessary keeping the police informed, subject to guidelines, on health and safety requirements.

1.5.Taking responsibility for fire and intruder alarms.

1.6.Ensuring that the necessary action is taken to minimise risk of further intrusion and damage, pending more permanent repairs.

1.7.Reporting all burglaries to appropriate Authorities including the Headteacher, Premises Manager, and Police.

1.8.Ensure gates and entrances are kept clear.

1.9.Deal with dangerously parked cars both on site and immediately outside the school gate eg zig zag yellow lines.

  1. Maintenance

2.1Taking responsibility as required by the Premises Officer for the maintenance upkeep of premises, including buildings, fixtures, fittings and furniture.

2.2Carry out minor repairs and report defects to line manager – ordering repairs and work after agreement with line manager.

2.3Use any specific skills or expertise where possible.

2.4Engage in preventative maintenance – to eliminate potential hazards.

2.5Taking responsibility as required by the Premises Manager for checks on drains, gullies, toilets etc taking appropriate action as necessary.

2.6Taking responsibility for monitoring contractors on site including cleaning and ground maintenance, ensuring safety procedures are adhered to and work completed satisfactorily.

2.7Conducting mandatory checks.

2.8Maintain stock lists of equipment and furniture.

  1. Heating, Ventilation and Plant

3.1Taking responsibility as required by the Premises Manager for gas or electric meter readings.

3.2Dealing with any faults and defects as required including checking and

resetting breaker fuses.

3.3Check functioning of systems – maximise fuel efficiency.

3.4Check and replace lamps, tubes etc in light fittings.

3.5Test fire alarm and other alarms regularly.

  1. Safety

4.1Maintain a safe and healthy environment referring all hazards to the

nominated Health & Safety Officer for the establishment.

4.2Have knowledge of use and maintenance of fire precautions and equipment.

4.3Clear ice and snow putting down salt to give access and egress to site.

4.4Investigate and report all accidents and potential hazards involving staff or plant for which responsible.

4.5Check safety doors are secured against unauthorised entry where appropriate.

4.6Take responsibility for appropriate notification to exterminate pests and vermin, ensuring that such work is carried out while pupils are not on site.

  1. Cleaning

5.1Playground – sweeping, clearing litter and debris including green areas – weeding on hard surfaces excluding the use of pesticides.

5.2Cleaning up bodily fluids and checking soiling of toilet areas throughout day, subject to Health & Safety guidelines.

5.3Report any problems with the cleanliness of the site to line manager.

  1. Porterage

6.1Dustbin management – waste removal.

6.2Help all school staff – eg assisting with large display mounting, moving of sets for productions, repairs to classroom/school equipment.

6.3Within capabilities remove and store furniture in available storage facilities.

6.4Open and lock up for evening lettings when required.

6.5Furniture moving, including dining tables and chairs where necessary.

  1. General Duties –as line manager requests

7.1Banking any monies as appropriate.

7.2Liaise with other users of school site.

7.3Oversee and co-ordinate deliveries of stock, supplies, etc to correct storage site.

7.4Managing lettings; ensuring all site users comply with H and S policies and Risk Assessments. Carrying out statutory maintenance checks and premises duties during the period of the let.

7.5Assisting with the set up and running of events such as PTA school fairs etc.

/ Ability to be a good representative of the school when dealing with the public, parents, children, council officers and contractors.
A willingness to learn, attend training and increase skills.

Other Requirements

/ Prepared to work outdoors approximately 50% of the working week. / Vehicle driver.
Educated/ qualified in a trade skill.
