Instructions for Outpatient Surgery

The following is to be used as a guide for your upcoming outpatient surgery. Please review the instructions carefully.

  1. Unless otherwise instructed by the physician, you should refrain from eating, drinking and smoking from midnight on, the night before your surgery. It is very important that you maintain this fast, otherwise surgery may have to be postponed.
  1. The hospital will call you on the day before surgery to inform you of the time of day your surgery will take place, as well as what time your are expected to report to the hospital. If you do not hear from the hospital by 3:00 PM on the day before your surgery, please call the hospital registration to find out what time you will need to be at the hospital.
  1. You should plan to be at the hospital approximately 4-6 hours. Make arrangements for transportation to and from the hospital. It is advisable that someone accompanies you for the entire process.
  1. Please shower or bathe at home before departing for the hospital. This will reduce the germ content of the skin and greatly reduce the chance for any post-operative complications. Remove all make-up, nail polish or other cosmetics.
  1. Leave all valuables and jewelry at home. Please wear comfortable clothing.
  1. Please notify our office or your physician if you should develop a cold, fever, sore throat, cough or any other symptoms of illness prior to your surgery.
  1. Illicit drugs, such as marijuana, etc. should not be ingested for at least 72 hours prior to surgery. Hazardous, unpredictable side effects can occur when drugs are combined with anesthetic agents. Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed at least 24 hours prior to surgery.
  1. Should it be necessary to postpone or cancel your surgery, you MUST contact our office at least one week in advance of the surgery. Please ask to speak directly with the medical assistant, should this occur.
  1. Pre-surgical authorizations or second medical opinions may be necessary. If you have HMO Insurance or Workman’s Compensation Claim, it is your responsibility to be sure that authorization is obtained for your surgery.

It is your responsibility for making your post-operative follow-up appointment with our office. You should anticipate being seen within one week following surgery.
