MICDS Eighth Grade Chorus 2003

First Trimester Grading Criteria

Each student in Eighth Grade Choir will be evaluated (Extending, Achieving, Area of Concern) in the following areas:

  • Demonstrates appropriate rehearsal and performance techniques.
  • Performs accompanied and unaccompanied literature using good intonation.
  • Describes and demonstrates the components of a good singing posture.
  • Describes the appropriate use of the breath as a singer to include breath acquisition, breath management, volume control, and tone quality.
  • Identifies pitches on the treble staff, bass staff, and the keyboard.
  • Identifies and discusses the value of notes and rests in simple meters (2/4, 3/4, 4/4).
  • Independently performs combinations of various note values, dotted notes, and rests in various time signatures using Kodaly terminology.
  • Writes Major scales using the prescribed scale formula.
  • Sings and aurally identifies Major scales using Solfege and Curwen handsigns.
  • Identifies Major key signatures up to three sharps and flats.
  • Identifies and follows musical direction signs: repeat signs, special endings, DC & DS, Coda, and Fine.
  • Classifies the style of studied music literature as being sacred or secular.
  • Listens to, discusses, and analyzes choral music using appropriate musical terminology.
  • Analyzes and evaluates vocal music performances of self and others.

Second Trimester Grading Criteria

Each student in Eighth Grade Choir will be evaluated (Extending, Achieving, Area of Concern) in the following areas:

  • Demonstrates appropriate rehearsal and performance techniques.
  • Performs accompanied and unaccompanied literature using good intonation.
  • Describes and independently demonstrates the components of a good singing

posture.

  • Describes the appropriate use of the breath as a singer to include breath

acquisition, breath management, volume control, and tone quality.

  • Identifies pitches up to three ledger lines above and below the treble and bass

staves.

  • Performs combinations of various note values, dotted notes, and rests in various

time signatures using Kodaly terminology and traditional counting system in an independent manner.

  • Sings Major scale and melodic patterns using Solfege.
  • Identifies Major key signatures up to five sharps and flats.
  • Identifies and performs dynamics and articulation markings.
  • Visually identifies melodic and harmonic intervals found within the Major scale.
  • Sightsings exercises and simple melodies in keys up to one sharp and flat using

Solfege.

  • Discusses various musical styles and identifies the styles of currently studied music

literature.

  • Listens to, discusses, and analyzes choral and instrumental music using appropriate

musical terminology

  • Analyzes and evaluates vocal music performances of self and others.

Third Trimester Grading Criteria

Each student in Eighth Grade Choir will be evaluated (Extending, Achieving, Area of Concern) in the following areas:

  • Demonstrates appropriate rehearsal and performance techniques.
  • Performs accompanied and unaccompanied literature using good intonation.
  • Independently demonstrates components of good singing posture.
  • Consistently demonstrates appropriate use of the breath to include breath

acquisition, breath management, volume control, and tone quality.

  • Sings and identifies intervals found within the Major scale.
  • Sings melodic patterns based on the primary chords of the Major scale.
  • Sightsings exercises and simple melodies in keys up to two sharps and flats

Using Solfege in an independent manner.

  • Identifies and writes all Major key signatures using the correct order of sharps and

flats.

  • Performs combinations of various note values, dotted notes, and rests in various

time signatures using traditional counting system in an independent manner.

  • Discusses various musical styles and identifies the style of the currently studied

music literature.

  • Listens to, discusses, and analyzes music using appropriate musical terminology.
  • Analyzes and evaluates vocal music performances of self and others.
