Draft #3 Methodology

Due: Week 12, Tuesday, Apr.10th, 2007

Draft #3 Methodology will be a revision of the second draft of your research proposal AND builds upon that by adding a methodology section and a revised reference page and a bibliography. Organize the Methodology draft using this outline:

Introduction(without using this title, but including an introductory paragraph).State and describe the problem or question for the reader and tell why it is important to study this. Briefly tell what you plan to study.

Research SiteIdentify the location you have chosen for this study and why it is appropriate for examining what you plan to examine. Identify the site’s dimensions (e.g., size of the district, racial breakdown, SES, etc.) from information available on line at NYSED. If the site is a single building, include the number of teachers, students, and grade levels to be included in the research.

Participants Describe the classroom(s) where the study will take place (e.g., gender breakdowns, number of students, number of instructors, presence of and number of instructional assistants, etc.).

Design of the Study (also called the Justification). Describe how you will accomplish the study. Justify your choice of research methods - quantitative or qualitative? Why is the method you chose most appropriate for the topic you are studying?Describe why this will be an Action Research project, i.e., it is being used to solve a problem or learn more about a problem and occurs in a natural setting, etc.

Data Sources Identify where your data will originate and how it will be collected. What instruments will you use? Are you going to use one of the following or all of them?

Observation — when, where, how many, what are you looking at, etc. Provide an example of an observation checklist if you use one.

Interviews — provide an example of interview(s) you use and discuss how the instrument was developed.

Questionnaire — If questionnaires are used, describe the methodology and rationale for developing the questionnaires.

Data AnalysisDescribe how the data will be analyzed. For example, will themes be noted and cataloged? Will you use coding surveys, interviews, or questionnaires? Will a conceptual map help to map the data?

Researcher’s Role Describe how you (the researcher) will fit into the setting or be perceived in the research setting by students and teachers.

Validity, and Credibility Using literature on your chosen method and the textbook and readings, show how you intend to ensure that the methods you use produce valid information. Discuss how you might increase the credibility of the study by using prolonged participation at the study site, using triangulation etc.

Ethical Issues Identify any ethical issues involved in conducting your action research. How will you make sure that your research is conducted in an ethical manner? How would you approach informed consent issues?

Procedures/Timeline Provide a list of tasks and milestones in chronological order. A timetable will be helpful.
