Sherwood man in critical, but stable, condition following crash

A Sherwood man is in critical, but stable, condition in a Halifax hospital following a crash Saturday at Scotia Speedworld.

Tom Nicholls was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre around 5 p.m. The crash occurred during an open practice at the racetrack, located near the HalifaxInternationalAirport.

“He went off the track and into the tire wall,” said Scotia Speedworld general manager Ken Cunning.

No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured.

“We won’t know what happened until we speak to him,” Cunning said.

Officials looked at the car but could not come up with a definitive reason for the crash.

Emergency Health Services were called to the scene at 4:30 p.m. Paramedics arrived at 4:47 p.m. and called for a LifeFlight at 4:48 p.m.

"Tom’s family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and ask that their privacy be respected at this time," said a news release Sunday night from the Maritime Pro Stock Tour.

Nicholls is a well-known powerlifter, having won two world championships and many national titles. He won four gold medals at this year's Commonwealth Games in December in England.

He began his stock car racing career last year in the Street Stock class at Oyster Bed Speedway. He was looking at moving to the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour this season, which starts Sunday, May 20 at Scotia Speedworld.

A story on said the 49-year-old man had more than 30 races tentatively scheduled between the two series.

People, who were at the track Saturday, declined to comment when contacted by The Guardian out of respect to the family.

Money

There was a man who worked all of his life and saved all of his money. He was a real miser when it came to his money. He loved money more than just about anything, and just before he died, he said to his wife, "Now listen, when I die, I want you to take all my money and place it in the casket with me. I wanna take my money to the afterlife."

So he got his wife to promise him with all her heart that when he died, she would put all the money in the casket with him.

Well, one day he died. He was stretched out in the casket, the wife was sitting there in black next to her closest friend. When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said "Wait just a minute!"

She had a shoe box with her, she came over with the box and placed it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket down and rolled it away. Her friend said, "I hope you weren't crazy enough to put all that money in the casket."

"Yes," the wife said, "I promised. I'm a good Christian, I can't lie. I promised him that I was going to put that money in that casket with him."

"You mean to tell me you put every cent of his money in the casket with him?"

"I sure did. I got it all together, put it into my account and I wrote him a check."

(Thanks Jessica)
