MENTORING OPPORTUNITY: PART TIME POSITIONS

The Centre for Initiatives in Education hires Carleton students interested in being mentor/tutors for Aboriginal high school students in Ottawa. This program supports students at a local the Urban Aboriginal Alternative High School and at Rideau High School. The AHSMP is currently running a pilot program at Queen Elizabeth Elementary School. Applicants who have an interest in supporting Aboriginal elementary students should indicate this on their application. Often the assistance of a mentor can be a key factor in maintaining the motivation to complete secondary studies.

The positions offer 6 hours per week – 4 hours on site plus 2 hours each week for training sessions or feedback meetings with the coordinators. There will also be additional paid training sessions during the year.

School Board regulations require current police checks for those working with students. This cost will be reimbursed.

Position Description

Position Description / AHSMP mentors work with students at three educational sites in Ottawa where they mentor and/or tutor Aboriginal students. Mentor/tutors are also required to attend scheduled training sessions organized by the coordinators.
Responsibilities / ·  Provide encouragement and support to students in their efforts to complete secondary education. Typical activities include: participating in school activities (excursions, trips, etc.), sharing cultural knowledge, tutoring students who require additional support and developing mentoring relationships with students.
·  Provide information and assistance to those who are considering post-secondary education.
·  Take part in mentor training and weekly debriefing meetings.
·  Maintain effective communication with Mentor/Tutor Coordinator and the school supervisory staff.
Requirements / ·  Knowledge of and sensitivity to Aboriginal (First Nations, Inuit, and/or Métis) traditions, cultures, practices, and educational issues.
·  Experience working with Aboriginal youth, or with Aboriginal institutions/organizations. (Related experience is considered, for example, community involvement through volunteer experience, work with at-risk youth).
·  Good academic standing at Carleton University
·  Available for at least one four hour period weekly between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.
·  Able to work as part of a team.
·  Excellent communication skills.
·  Interested in giving back to the community and in developing leadership skills.
Hours / 6 hours/week during the academic year, excluding exam period.
Remuneration / $15.00/hour, including time spent in training.
