Memphis Housing Authority

Police Officer Requirements

In order to promote a safe living environment for all tenants, the Memphis Housing Authority agrees to house a police officer on property at reduced rent in exchange for patrolling and security services. The following agreement outlines expectations set by the Memphis Housing Authority and will be followed by the police officer living on property at reduced rent.

  • The officer will sign and comply with the lease used by every tenant of the Authority. All policies governing tenants will also govern the resident officer.
  • The officer will report twice monthly (on the first and fifteenth) to the Housing Authority office using the form provided by the Authority.
  • The officer will patrol each campus daily either on foot or in a vehicle noting any unusual behavior or activity in his/her report. If the activity should be reported to the office immediately, the officer agrees to do so.
  • The officer will report any complaint, claim, incident, or response involving a tenant to the office either in report or in person within 24 hours of the incident.
  • The officer will interview two residents per month to make himself/herself more approachable and develop a rapport. The interview will be documented in the report form provided by the Authority.
  • The Authority agrees to report any criminal or suspicious activity to the police department so that appropriate action may be taken. The Authority agrees to cooperate in any way to assist the police department and resident officer in maintaining the safety of the tenants.
  • The Authority agrees to discount the resident officer’s rent in exchange for the services listed above.

In the event that the resident officer fails to comply with the agreement listed above, the Authority will discontinue the officer’s discounted rent. The officer will be expected to pay rent based on income using the same guidelines set by HUD for other tenants. The officer may elect to move, but will only be evicted if his/her lease is broken or if policy violation calls for eviction. The termination of this agreement entitles the resident officer all previliges of tenancy. These requirements are subject to change by both parties with sufficient notice.
