1.0  PURPOSE

1.1 To establish a policy and procedure for periodic testing of the emergency power system and its components.

2.0  POLICY

2.1 It shall be the policy of the department to operate, maintain, and test the emergency power system in accordance with applicable standards, currently the standard.

2.2 The responsibility for maintenance and testing of the emergency generator, switchboards and transfer switches shall be assigned to the shift leadman.

2.3 The responsibility for the operation and maintenance of generator prime movers, and auxiliaries such as cooling, fuel and starting shall be assigned to the shift leadman.

3.0  PROCEDURES

3.1 Test and Operating Personnel

3.1.1 Engineering Management shall designate personnel to conduct the tests.

3.1.2  The department performs weekly test starts of the emergency generator(s). In addition, the generators are exercised monthly under full applicable load. Automatic Transfer Switches are exercised monthly. Battery Lights are tested monthly.

3.1.3  Critical departments should be notified before and after the test procedure to minimize disruption to critical services.

3.2 Records and Maintained

3.2.1  A record of starting running and transfer times, loads experienced and other data shall be maintained and kept in the Engineering Shop.

3.2.2  Planned maintenance records for each generator and transfer switch shall be established and maintained and kept in the Engineering Shop.

3.2.3  Planned maintenance records for each prime mover and its auxiliaries shall be established and maintained and kept in the Engineering Shop.

3.2.4  Records and information on Campus UPS Systems, battery lighting, and other stored energy systems shall be established and maintained in the Engineering Shop.
