RE: Application for High School Mathematics Achievement Level Descriptors Committee Members

CONTACT: Jennifer Judkins, Mathematics Assessment Specialist

As we transition to the new Washington State K–12 Mathematics Learning Standards (Common Core State Standards for Mathematics) and the assessments of those standards, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mathematics Assessment Office is convening educator committees to articulate new Achievement Level Descriptors (ALDs) for the mathematics end-of-course (EOC) exit exams. ALDs are intended to describe the performance on the state assessment exhibited by students at a particular achievement level to educators and parents. Implementation of the new high school learning standards provides the opportunity to develop new, clear, and concise ALDs with the help of educators.

The committees will meet July 20–21, in the SeaTac area. We are seeking a broad audience of educators to participate in this important step to review and approve the drafted ALDs. The final recommendations by the committees will be reflective of the whole group rather than the opinions of individual members.

The ALDs will articulate the expectations of the achievement levels for the exit exams and guide educators in planning for the instructional needs of their students. The ALDs will also inform language that will appear on the Individual Student Reports (ISRs) sent to families in the fall. This language can enhance families’ understanding of their child’s academic strengths and weaknesses.

We intend to assemble two 15 member ALD committees for one day each—one for the year 1 mathematics EOC exit exams (Algebra I/Integrated Mathematics I) and one for the year 2 mathematics EOC exit exams (Geometry/Integrated Mathematics II). These committees should represent Washington’s diverse student population. Applicants must have a full-time certificated contract for the 2014–15 or 2015–16 school year with either a district or an educational service district (ESD). Additionally, the ideal candidate possesses the following qualifications:

·  At least three years experience working in the mathematics course for which they are applying. Preference will be given to educators who have classroom experience in the mathematics course in the past three years.

·  Ability to function well in large and small groups and to respond professionally to the input of diverse opinions.

·  Ability to communicate thoughts clearly and to listen well.

·  Ability to attend the day-long meeting, in its entirety.

Meeting details and links to access the committee applications are provided below:
