Speech to Speech (STS) enables persons with a speech disability to make telephone calls using their own voice (or an assistive voice device/synthesizer output). A specially trained Relay Operator serves as the speech-disabled user's voice and repeats his/her responses to the called party whenever needed. The STS user hears the other party's voice. No special equipment is required to use STS.

Who Uses STS?

Often people with speech disabilities have difficulty communicating by telephone because the parties they are calling cannot understand their speech. They want to be independent and not rely on friends and family to help make calls. People with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy including ALS, Parkinson’s disease, and those who are coping with the limitations from a stroke or traumatic brain injury may have speech disabilities. People who stutter or have had a laryngectomy may also have difficulty being understood. In general, anyone with a speech disability or anyone who wishes to call someone with a speech disability can use STS.

How do you use STS?

Simply dial 1-877-787-0503 to reach a Wyoming Relay STS operator. 7-1-1 dialing is available for STS users; however, if you dial 7-1-1 you will either need to notify the relay operator that you are making a STS call, or you can contact Wyoming Relay STS Customer Service at 1-877-787-1989 to set-up a customer profile to indicate that you want all your future calls to automatically connect as a STS call. Persons with speech disabilities may also receive STS calls. The calling party calls the relay center by dialing 7-1-1 and provides the operator with the phone number of the person with a speech disability. All calls are strictly confidential and no records of any conversations are maintained. Spanish STS is available upon request.

There may be instances where an STS user will be asked to repeat his/her message to ensure that it is conveyed correctly.

My Saved Messages

·  A convenient solution to the problem of dictating a message for an answering machine, which is then unable to be delivered due to a busy signal.

·  Upon request, the STS relay operator can copy any messages desired onto your customer profile for 24 hours.

·  When you try again, you simply re-dial STS service and ask to retrieve saved messages.

·  After 24 hours the message copied into your customer profile is automatically deleted from the system.

My Style

·  You are allowed to determine the kind of conversation style.

·  STS relay operators can simply look up your style in the customer profile such as re-voice the entire conversation or simply repeat upon request.

My Phone Book

·  Your customer profile can store up to 30 speed dial numbers in your phone book.

·  You simply say the name of the person being called

My Email Set Up- You can email call instructions or information 2 to 24 hours prior to the call. Before you use My Email Set Up, it is important to call My Support so that an STS customer support representative can create your customized profile. Information can be included such as:

·  the number to be dialed

·  the name of the person being called

·  any special instructions

·  the subject of the call, or

·  anything that makes it easier for you to complete the call.

Video-Assisted (V-A) STS- Video-Assisted STS utilizes video conferencing technology to provide the STS relay operator with visual cues during the conversation which can improve the quality of your call. To make a V-A STS call, dial the Wyoming Relay STS toll-free number (1-877-787-0503) and request V-A STS. The relay operator will initiate a one-way video session to you and then dial the person you want to call using standard STS procedures. STS Customer Service (1-877-787-1989) can provide you additional information on equipment requirements and call procedures.
