Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Attendees: Cori Bland, Jana Compton, Shelley Cordier, Jeannette Hovermale, Alexis McQuillan, Lon McQuillan, Sheila Pederson, Dina Ratzlaff, Patricia Sterns, Chris Thornburgh, Becky Wood, and Mr. Bland (12).

Meeting called to order and introductions made at 7:02 p.m.

Guest Speaker

Mr. Thornburgh, teacher of 6th Grade Language Arts, Leadership/Yearbook, Writing Intervention, and 6th grade rotation of Digital Citizenship, spoke about his role at Cheldelin. Leadership is made up of a group of 8th graders who were selected in the spring. Some of them are WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) leaders too. Mr. Thornburgh works with the Leadership kids to encourage and foster leadership and lead by example. The main focus of the class is to build connections with students. He encourages kids to step out of their comfort zone in an effort to grow. Some of the duties of Leadership are:

·  Recycle collection every week

·  Litter patrol around campus

·  Lost and Found

·  Updating Reader Board outside

·  Running assemblies

·  Impact Cheldelin -- wrote thank you letters to the businesses who donated

·  WEB lunches/activities -- lead team building activities with 6th graders

·  Spirit week -- responsible for choosing days, activities, promoting

·  Yearbook -- "Be the Difference" is the theme and the goal is to include as many kids as possible so it represents Cheldelin's student body. It is being designed with inclusivity in mind.

·  General school needs -- took pictures on the donated HP furniture around the school and wrote thank you.

Mr. Thornburgh also teaches the new 6th grade rotation, Digital Citizenship. Every 6th grader cycles through and the curriculum is "Common Sense Media." Kids are taught how to use school-issued ipads correctly and appropriately and make good decisions at school and home. The class discusses scams and schemes, cyber bullying, not giving away personal information, etc. All assignments are digital and turned in that way. Mr. Thornburgh has received the following feedback from kids: "I didn't think about that" or "I didn't know that." A parent asked whether keyboarding was being taught as part of that rotation and it is not.

Secretary Report

The minutes from the January meeting were approved with no changes.

Treasurer Report

Cori reported that $437.50 was earned from the Pastini's January dine out and $65.64 was earned from the Fred Meyer community rewards program. Several approved Teacher Grant Requests will be paid in February: kiln repairs (Monroe) $200, Choralpalooza (Gollman) $100, and science supplies (Davis) $472.65.

Shelley asked if the grade level teams had decided how to spend their $2000 Enrichment/Field Trip funds from Impact Cheldelin. The 7th/8th graders will probably use it as they have in the past: OMSI field trip (7th grade) and Mock Congress/Mary's Peak field trip (8th graders). The 6th grade team hasn't decided yet.

Mr. Bland noted that some of the 8th grade funds may go toward bussing kids back and forth between Cheldelin and CV during the extra four snow days (tacked on to the end of the year). He has proposed to spend those extra days on preparing kids for 9th, 8th, and 7th grades respectively. He is working with CV to see if the 8th graders can visit during those days to familiarize themselves with the school and get a head start for next year. The 6th and 7th graders will focus on 7th and 8th grade year preparation at Cheldelin.

Budget Change Proposal

Since HP has donated technology stations to the library, Mr. Bland proposed using the $1885 in the Technology Stations budget line toward designing a reading nook in the library, which will be used for the student body and small classes (Reading Lab plans to use 1x/mo). Thanks to the HP donations, we have almost all new furniture in the library! The reading nook proposal includes 12 furniture items including some swivel chairs for a total of $1870. The furniture will be purchased from a local business, Corvallis Furniture. It is meant to be a comfortable space where kids can read for fun, learn, relax, and collaborate. Mr. Bland has also purchasing some flat screen TVs (out of the building budget) and one will be located near the reading nook to project student media projects, etc.

MOTION: After discussion, Patricia Sterns moved to authorize using the Technology Station budget line of $1885 to develop a reading nook area in the library.

VOTE: approved with all in favor.

Dine Out Coordinator Report

Jeannette reported the February dine out is at Buffalo Wild Wings (two Wednesdays in a row: February 8 & 15). Take a paper coupon, show the coupon on your phone, or mention Cheldelin when ordering. The March dine out is at Cirello's pizza on Tuesday, March 14.

Teacher Grant Coordinator

Patricia reported that she has a request in progress from Mrs. Cadotte to bind copies of the novels that have been written by the NaNoWriMoclub. The request is for $100 and the bound novels will be on display in the library. Patricia will send another reminder e-mail to the teachers that we have funds available and are waiting for grant requests!

Volunteer Opportunities

Sheila reported that Susan Conway will co-coordinate either the April conference dinner (plan for 35) or Staff Appreciation Week in May. She will work with her to make decisions and set up the online sign up. Sheila is meeting with Mr. Bland this week to discuss the 8th grade party. Mr. Bland informed us that Deb Harry, counselor, has agreed to be the staff coordinator. Sheila also mentioned that there will be openings on the CPO Board for next year: President, Secretary and Volunteer Coordinator. We discussed having "bring a friend" night at the next meeting. Sheila reported for Erika Cook, Operations Administrator, that Grocery Outlet is offering 3% cash back for people shopping and presenting a Cheldelin Grocery Outlet card. The promotion runs through the end of April and may be extended based on response. Sheila distributed cards to those who wanted them.

Principal's Report

Mr. Bland reported that the building has a new color printer and large laminator. The Behavioral staff will be trained on how to use the laminator and complete jobs for teachers. Also, Mr. Bland has purchased five flat screen TVs, which will scroll the morning announcements and feature kindness messages in the following locations:

·  in hallway, near student store

·  library, near reading nook

·  two in cafeteria

·  office

Mr. Bland has proposed and presented to the executive team and staff a change to the schedule for next year: M-W will have all seven periods; Th will be longer odd periods and FLEX/Advisor; F will feature even periods and FLEX/Advisor. Extended Learning Time (XLT) will be largely eliminated with the exception of two 30 minute XLTs (unless your child has intervention during that time) on Thursdays and Fridays. Additional intervention will be woven into elective classes so the kids are doing intervention work in a class and on a topic that they enjoy. The elimination of XLT means that students will have two elective classes (there will be 5-6 additional electives to choose from). Mr. Bland said that technical changes (structure of schedule) force adaptive changes and it will encourage teachers to evaluate how much homework is given and perhaps eliminate less pertinent homework.

Mr. Bland also announced that Cheldelin will be moving to an online schedule selection system. The kids will choose their schedule first with parents following up to approve or change.

Mr. Bland is meeting with Linus Pauling's Principal on Wednesday, February 8th, to discuss what the end of the year will look like and coordinate the 8th grade promotion/party date so they are on the same page.

General Discussion

There was some concern about losing XLT and less homework. A parent stated that some subjects, such as math, require lots of practice and less is not necessarily good in that situation. Another parent suggested that teachers make more time for practice during class so assistance can be given at that time. Mr. Bland's response was that how much your child does in XLT is dependent on personality and the internal drive of the child. Most kids waste a lot of time during XLT, which could be used as additional instructional time.

Meeting adjourned: 8:20 p.m.
