Training Programme for Basic Grade Pharmacists

Aim

To develop competency in Medicines Information

Objectives

  • To attain the specified competencies outlined in the Competency Assessment for Foundation Pharmacists in Medicines Informationavailable from:
  • To attend monthly meetings with MI line manager or tutor

Month 1

  • Be allocated a tutor
  • Complete checklist (Appendix 1)
  • Complete baseline assessment of experience of different enquiry types (Appendix 2)
  • Read standard operating procedures and risk assessment formsfor Medicines Information.
  • Have daily contact with shift lead
  • Have all enquiries checked by tutor or shift lead
  • Track your progress through the self-directed topics on the Medicines Learning Portal (Appendix 3)
  • Undertake and record assessments of own progress using theFoundation pharmacist assessment framework.docxand prioritise learning needs. Review with line manager or tutor during monthly meeting.

Month 2

  • Have daily contact with shift lead
  • Have enquiries checked or discussed with shift lead or tutor
  • Maintain a record of enquiries undertakenwhere no changes were required (Appendix 4)
  • When 2 enquiries of a particular category have been completed to a satisfactory level, you will be “signed off” to give out this category of enquiry without a check.
  • Continue undertaking and recording assessments of own progress using theFoundation pharmacist assessment framework.docx and prioritise learning needs. Review with line manager or tutor during monthly meeting.

Months 3+

  • Have daily contact with shift lead
  • Have all categories of enquiry for which you have not been “signed off” checked by tutor or shift lead.
  • Continue to maintain a record of enquiries undertaken where no changes were required(Appendix 4).
  • Continue undertaking and recording assessments of own progress using theFoundation pharmacist assessment framework.docx and prioritise learning needs. Review with line manager or tutor during monthly meeting.
  • Undertake 2-3 trainee shift lead sessions per week (with support of senior pharmacist at all times)

The Pharmacist must keep the shift lead up-to-date with progress on their enquiries and allow enough time for enquiries to be checked within the agreed deadline.
