Programme Outline

Pinky the puppet likes to play at the computer. She enjoys talking to her friends on the computer. One day, she receives an invitation to a Hobby Day on which children will display their favourite hobbies. Pinky does not know what a hobby is and decides to find it out from her friends.

Pinky meets some of her friends who show her their hobbies.These include playing the violin, playing tennis, collecting sea shells, making picture frames, making necklaces, etc. Seeing theirfriends enjoying their hobbies so much, Pinky feels sad that she herself does not have any.

The Hobby Day is a great success. Lots of children go there and display their hobbies. Watch the programme to find out what Pinky is going to do on that day and what hobby she is going to share with her friends.

Suggested Activities

  1. Motivate the class by asking the pupils what they like to do in their spare time. List the pupils’ answers on the board.

Examples:

swimming, playing computer games, playing the piano, etc.

The teacher can also share with the class his/her favourite pastimes.

  1. Briefly introduce the outline of the programme. Ask the pupils to guess what hobby Pinky can show to her friends on Hobby Day.
  2. After viewing the programme, teachers can ask pupils to recall the type of hobby that the different characters have in the programme. Teachers can also ask pupils to talk about the hobby that Pinky has finally acquired at the end of the programme.
  1. Give out Copymaster 1 to pupils before viewing the programme. Ask pupils to fill in the hobbies of the different characters in the programme.

writing something about them

  1. Pupils complete Copymaster 2. They need to read what Pinky has written about her friend, Polly. Based on what Pinky has written, pupils are required to write about other friends of Pinky. Teachers may draw pupils’ attention to the use of present tense and third person singular in their descriptions.In Part 2b, pupils are encouraged to draw a picture of their own hobby and write a brief description of their hobby.

  1. As a follow-up activity, pupils can be encouraged to interview a number of their friends about their hobbies and take pictures of their friends’ hobbies. They can then make an album of their friends’ hobbies just like what Pinky did in the programme.
