FLAG FOOTBALL RULES

GENERAL

  1. The field will be 80 yards long and 40 yards wide, with 10-yard end zones.
  2. Maximum number on team is 16.
  3. Maximum number on the field is 8.
  4. Unlimited number of substitutions
  5. The kickoff will be a punt from the 20-yard line. (No kicking tees allowed.)
  6. The kickoff must be fielded in the air. If it is not fielded in the air the ball is spotted where it hits the ground.
  7. No on-side kicks.
  8. Each team has 4 downs to score or reach the next 20yard stripe for a first down. If the ball touches the line, it is a first down.
  9. The player will be considered down where the flag was pulled off.
  10. When blocking, a person cannot leave their feet.
  11. All blocks must be above the waist.
  12. When blocking, hands must remain on the chest.
  13. All blocks must be from the front (NO CLIPPING).
  14. All players are eligible receivers.
  15. The offensive team must have a center.
  16. In case of a tie, each team will get possession of the ball from their opponent’s 20-yard line. They will have four plays to score.
  17. All punts must be announced. Once a punt is declared, there will be no cancellation.
  18. The defense must have at least 3 men on the line of scrimmage for punts.
  19. All fumbles are dead balls, and cannot be advanced.
  20. One foot in-bounds is a catch.
  21. You are down if your knee hits the ground.
  22. A punt must be fielded in the air. If it is not fielded in the air, the ball is spotted where it hits the ground.
  23. In the case of a bad snap, the ball is dead where it hits the ground.
  24. If both teams fail to show up, the game will be called a double forfeit and each team will receive a loss in the standings.
  25. To play, the teams must have at least 7 players or the team will be forced to forfeit.
  26. If one team is short a member, the opposing team can choose to play them at the same number of players or they can choose to play with 8 players versus however many players the opposition has.
  27. All shirts must be tucked in.

Scoring

  1. Touchdown - 6 points
  2. Extra Point from 3 yard line - 1 point
  3. Extra Point from 10 yard line - 2 points
  4. Safety - 2 points
  5. Interception returned for score on 1 pt. PAT attempt – 1 point
  6. Interception returned for score on 2 pt. PAT attempt – 2 points

Time

  1. A game will consist of two 22minute halves. There will be a five-minute break at halftime.
  2. Running clock for entire game except for the last minute of 2nd half.
  3. One timeout allowed each half per team. Each timeout will be no longer than 1 minute.
  4. You will be allowed 40 seconds between plays.

Penalties

  1. Loss of down (plus a 5-yard penalty):
  2. Illegal forward pass
  3. Intentionally grounding a pass
  4. Offensive pass interference
  5. Loss of5 yards:
  6. Delay of game – will be enforced this year 40 second play clock
  7. Illegal motion
  8. Offside
  9. A player on the line receiving the snap.
  10. Loss of 10 yards:
  11. Offensive holding from the spot of the foul
  12. Guarding the flag (from the spot of the foul)
  13. Untucked shirt covering the flags.
  14. Loss of 15 yards:
  15. Unportsmanlike conduct
  16. Striking, kneeing or kicking (along with disqualification)
  17. Clipping
  18. Tripping
  19. Any contact below the waist
  20. Unnecessary roughness (tackling)
  21. Defensive pass interference is 15 yards, automatic 1st down.
  22. Defensive holding is a 5 yards, automatic 1st down.

Referees

The referee’s decision is final. There will be no arguing, and if a player becomes abusive then that person will be flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. See new Sportsmanship Rating System.

CONDUCT

Flagrant fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct, or abusive and/or derogatory language will not be tolerated and guilty individuals will be subject to banishment from the game. The Director, with the approval of the Advisory Council, may disqualify any team or individual guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct from intramural competition. Disqualification may be temporary or permanent. See new Sportsmanship Rating System.

Injuries

  1. THE DEPARTMENT OF INTRAMURALS IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR INJURIES INCURRED IN INTRAMURAL COMPETITION.
  2. INJURIES SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE INTRAMURAL DIRECTOR AND/OR THE HEALTHCENTER.
  3. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY NOTIFY CAMPUS SAFETY, AND THEN CALL 911 TO GET IN TOUCH WITH EMT’S.
