ii. Describe Apparent Sun, Mean Sun and Dynamic Mean Sun. 5

Q2. i. What is a Position Line? Will the position line obtained by Intercept method differ from that obtained using Long by Chron Method for the same celestial observation? Give Reasons in support of your answer. 5

ii. What corrections are applied to the sextant altitude of Pole Star to calculate Observed Latitude of observer? 5

Q3. An observer in position 22° 05.0’N 034° 12.5’W found the true altitude of a star with declination 10° 15’N to be 41° 02’ west of the meridian. If GHA Aries at that instant was 223° 12’, find the Star’s SHA. 10

Q4. On 19th Jan 1992, at about 1530 at ship in DR 40° 16’S 175° 31’E, the sextant altitude of Sun’s LL was43° 27.4’ when the chron (error 02m 12s fast ) showed 03h 50m 12 s. If HE was 22m and IE was 1.5’ on the arc, required the direction of the PL and a position through which it passes. 10

Q5. i. On 1st May 1992, in DR longitude 179 58’E, the observed altitude of the Sun’s LL on the meridian was 64 35.9’ south of the observer. If HE was 15m, find the latitude and the PL.

Needles Point Light House 319° (C)

St. Catherine Point Light House 359° (C)

Nab Tower Lt. House 050° (C)

Find the ship’s Position and Deviation if the Variation was 6° W.

Q10. A ship steering 106° (C) at 12 knots, at 0900 hrs observed Pte. De Barlfleur Lt. Ho. Bore 145°(C) and at 1100 hrs the same light house was abeam. A current was known to be setting 346° (M) at 2 knots throughout. Find the vessel’s position at 0900 and 1100 Hrs. (Deviation 4.4° W, Variation 6° W) 8

Q11. At 1700 hrs Vertical Sextant Angle of Hardy Monument (240m) was 1° 03’ and the Bill of Portland Lt. Ho. (43m) was 00° 10’. Find the ship’s position. 5
