Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 1-2 years successful experience involved with running a transportation department.
  2. Associates Degree. In business or a related technical field
  3. Possession of and/or ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.
  4. Possess a good driving record.
  5. Basic understanding of the educational process and the corresponding role of transportation.
  6. Proven ability to manage personnel and resources and communicate effectively with staff, parents and teachers.
  7. Strong knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations related to bus driving.
  8. Ability to obtain and maintain CDL licensure and MSBO Transportation Director Certificate.
  9. Proficiency in managing a budget.
  10. Ability to modify work shift before and after school to provide appropriate coverage for transportation activities.
  11. Ability to properly utilize tools, software and equipment necessary in conducting Transportation duties. This includes but not limited to routing software, Microsoft Office, student and accounting software.
  12. Such alternatives or exceptions to the above that the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. 3-5 years successful experience involved with running a public school district transportation department.
  2. Proficiency in transportation routing software (Poly-Plot).
  3. Knowledge of the Dearborn Public Schools community and its inherent roadways.
  4. Successful experience as a supervisor in a unionized setting.
  5. Possess MSBO Transportation Director Certificate.
  6. Possess Michigan Class A UST System Operator Certificate

Primary Function:

The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Director of Transportation in administration of the Transportation Department, including direct supervision of 100+ employees comprised of bus drivers, bus assistants, mechanics, and transportation secretaries. The Supervisor is responsible in assisting the Director for the safe, efficient, and effective transportation of students.

The Dearborn Public School District covers 28.8 square miles, and is composed of three high schools, seven middle schools, twenty-one elementary schools, and multi-school building. Transportation is provided to more than 4,900 students on a daily basis.

Primary Job Duties:

  1. Organizes and implements a pupil transportation system within the policies of the Board of Education.
  2. Assist in planning and development of regular and special school bus schedules based on requirements established by State law, Board policy and various administrative department requirements.
  3. Assist in develop, publish and regularly review bus routes and stop locations.
  4. Supervision of drivers and mechanics.
  5. Properly maintain all school buses and other district vehicles so that they may operate with optimum safety and efficiency.
  6. Provide assistance in organization, direction, and evaluation of driver and mechanic training programs.
  7. Process and approve payroll for transportation division.
  8. Help in the evaluation of all district-owned vehicles with regard to present and future maintenance requirements.
  9. Develops and implements plans for preventive and ongoing equipment maintenance, and vehicle replacement schedule for all district vehicles.
  10. Assist in completing all reports as required by State, county and local agencies in a timely fashion and meeting deadlines.
  11. Assisting in the preparation of future budget requests for personnel and equipment.
  12. Provide assistance in maintaining adequate stores of vehicle replacement parts, supplies, and tools with proper inventory control and security.
  13. Develop safety regulations, monitor and promote safety practises for all Transportation personnel.
  14. Work with the superintendent, administration and other school personnel to develop rules and procedures for student conduct relating to transportation and to keep the proper school officials, including principals, fully informed on all matters concerning the transportation system.
  15. Enforce all state and national regulations and Board of Education policies.
  16. Design and maintain adequate personnel, vehicle, and other necessary records to promote efficiency, effectiveness and economy of operation.
  17. Model appropriate customer service and problem solving practices for employees when dealing with transportation concerns with District stakeholders.
  18. Monitors compliance with all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
  19. Help develop and maintain lists of children eligible for transportation,
  20. Approves bus stops in safe locations according to the Michigan Department of Ed guidelines.
  21. Coordinates with principals and approves field trips and athletic trips for transportation.
  22. Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and recommending hires for bus drivers, assistants, and substitute bus drivers and assistants.
  23. Attends appropriate committee and staff meetings.
  24. Knowledge of bus system video record recording program.
  25. Periodically checks the driving records of all bus drivers in order to assure student safety.
  26. Participate in facilitating in-service programs for school bus drivers, with the implementation of a drug/alcohol testing program in compliance with federal regulations.
  27. Communicates as needed with the state Department of Transportation and County Road Commission on roads, bridges, signs, etc.
  28. Investigates and reports crashes and safety related incidents, when applicable, using the uniform school bus crash reporting and standard safety incident investigation process.
  29. Interprets transportation procedure and regulations to public and staff.
  30. Assist in completing and dispatching insurance reports.
  31. Works with administrators, teachers, transportation personnel, students, parents and various public and private agencies to improve their knowledge and the quality of the transportation system.
  32. Exhibits knowledge of Dearborn’s collective bargaining agreements in relation to transportation, its demands, and willingness for resolving difficulties at the appropriate levels.
  33. Perform other related duties or responsibilities as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and climb bus steps. The employee is required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision. Frequent driving is necessary. Essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interaction with the public and other workers. The position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours, direct responsibility for the safety, and well-being or work output of the other people and meet multiple demands.
