Course Description – 18 Weeks

Students combine resources and techniques into systems, realizing technology as a system. By simulating systems, assessing their impacts, and relating this experience to the two previous levels, students gain an insight into how to approach the problems and opportunities of a technological world in a broad sense. They also explore occupational areas and educational programs for technology-oriented careers.

  • Describe the characteristics and scope of technology.
  • Identify the core concepts of technology.
  • Explain the influences of technology on history.
  • Use tools, materials, and equipment safely.
  • Maintain information (sketches, notes, and reports) in a journal/portfolio.
  • Evaluate the impact of products and systems.
  • Apply processes and resources to solve technological problems.
  • Analyze technological systems.
  • Use modeling and computer-aided design systems.
  • Use computer hardware and software for problem solving.
  • Design an information and communication system to solve a problem.
  • Design a manufacturing system to solve a problem.
  • Design a construction system to solve a problem.
  • Design a transportation system to solve a problem.
  • Design an energy and power technology system to solve a problem. Apply trouble-shooting skills within a system.
  • Assess the impact of technological systems on individuals, resources, society, and the environment.

The 8th Grade will complete units of study related to:

  • The Design Process and Problem Solving
  • How Things Work (Systems)
  • How Business Works

Grading Policy

Students will be graded on daily participation, daily assignments, tests, projects and lab work.

Class Procedures

  1. Be in your seat when the tardy bell rings.
  2. Bring your own pencil/pen and paper.
  3. No food or drink (unless you have a written medical excuse).
  4. Respect yourself – on time, prepared, ready to learn – you only fail if you quit.
  5. Respect other students. Don’t interfere with other’s learning.
  6. Respect the school – Respect the teacher.

Safety

Your child will be participating in Technology Education, which requires the use of power tools, hand tools, and other equipment as part of the instructional program. It is necessary that we have your approval for your child to use this type of equipment. All students will be instructed in the proper and safe use of these tools and will remain under the constant supervision of the teacher. Any student who does not comply with the safe handling and operation of the tools will be removed from the list of students who are allowed to use these tools.
