MaupBall

MaupBall was invented by Brian Maupin. He is a former football player and graduate of Jackson State University. MaupBall is a combination of basketball and team handball. It’s a fast-paced, competitive game that promotes TEAM play. It is excellent for body conditioning, helps in development of hand/eye coordination, and can be played indoors or outdoors.

Object of Game:

To pass the ball from teammate to teammate, only taking 3 steps (while in possession of the ball) and only holding the ball for 3 seconds. The ball is passed around until it is thrown to the goalie, who must catch and maintain possession of the ball while standing on the score zone (mat).

To Start the Game:

MaupBall is started by a jump ball between the centers from each team. The referee will toss the ball up; the centers may tip the ball to one of their teammates, or jump up and grab the ball and put it in play.

Equipment Needed to Play:

1 official MaupBall, 2 Score Zone Mats

Number of Players for MaupBall:

7 vs. 7 indoors / 9 vs. 9 outdoors

Positions and Responsibilities in MaupBall

  • Goalie – The goalie’s responsibility is to catch any attempt by HIS OR HER TEAMMATE to score, while standing on the mat or score zone. A goalie must have control of the ball with both feet on the mat for 2 seconds before a point is awarded to that team. A goalie may not run off the mat and catch the ball and run back on for a point. Each goal made is worth 1 point.
  • GoalTender – The goaltender is responsible for guarding the score zone area for his or her team. The goaltender may maneuver around the score zone area, but not step on or interfere with the goalie. If the goaltender makes contact with the ball before stepping on score zone mat, this legal.
  • Center – The center is responsible for the jump ball and may advance anywhere on the court or field.
  • Wings – May advance anywhere on the field or court; main responsibility is to try to score from the outside of score zone, and defend the perimeters of the score zone.
  • Breakers – Responsible for fast breaks when attempting to score, keeping their team moving and spread out around the field, may advance anywhere on the field or court, but mainly play in the middle of the playing area.

Indoor/Outdoor Rules –

  • A player may only advance the ball by taking 3 steps indoors and 5 steps

outdoors.

  • A player may only hold the ball in his or her possession for a maximum of 3 seconds indoor and 5 seconds outdoors.
  • A player “cannot” bounce or dribble the ball to advance the ball down the court or field.
  • A player may not enter or cross the line around the score zone to score a point.
  • A player cannot kick the ball at anytime.
  • A player must in-bound the ball with 2 hands over his or her head. (outside)
  • If a player drops the ball after attempting to receive the ball form his or her teammate, this constitutes a turnover and the opposite team may pick up the ball and put it in play form the spot of the infraction.
  • If a defensive player deflects or knocks the ball out of possession of the offensive player, this makes the ball free and any player from either team may pick up the ball and put it in play.
  • After a player accumulates 7 fouls, he or she is out of the game.
  • If a game ends in a tie during regulation play, then a 3-minute overtime will be played.
  • Goalies must be equal in height. A team may not have advantage by height of the goalie.
  • If 2 players get tied up with the ball, this constitutes a jump ball between the 2 players.
  • The goaltender is the only player allowed to guard the score zone.
