COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

As you apply to colleges, please be sure to check the college/university website for a listing of scholarships and deadlines. You will also want to research deadlines for applications, FAFSA information, and check to see if they require the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE.

Do not be intimidated by the high costs of private colleges. They usually offer more scholarship money that helps offset the cost!

NC State Park Scholarships

The Park Scholarships Program has a unique mission to make an important difference in the quality of the undergraduate culture at NC State while also having a tangible impact on the leaders it prepares. Park Scholars are selected based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The four-year award is valued at $75,000, including the full cost of education, and funding for a personal computer, educational trips, retreats, seminars, and grant opportunities.

**To apply, students must submit a resume to Mrs. Pierce in the Guidance Office by September 11th, 2015. Any student is welcome to apply on their own; however MRHS will be nominating 2 students. If you were not nominated, you may apply by visiting . In addition, students may self-nominate and all the documentation will be available until October 25th, 2015.

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship

Long considered the nation's premier undergraduate scholarship program, the Morehead-Cain offers dynamic young leaders a lifelong challenge to make a difference in the world. Eligibility is based on leadership, scholarship, moral force of character, and physical vigor. An average SAT scores for this year's incoming class of Morehead Scholars are between 2050-2230, and are typically within the top 10% of their graduating class.

**Applicants are NOT ALLOWED to apply binding Early Decision to any university (students may apply Early Action). Any student is welcome to apply on their own; however MRHS will be nominating 3 students. If you were not nominated, you may apply by visiting The deadline to self-nominate is October 1st, 2015. Lowell Bryan Scholars Program (Athletic Scholars) – Davidson College

Amount: $30,000.00 annually and renewable for four years. Bryan Scholarship finalists not named as winners are named Davidson Scholars. Recent Davidson Scholars awards have ranged from $2,000.00 to $30,000.00 annually. Criteria: This program honors scholar athletes who have potential to be strong leaders both in the classroom and in their sports. Two Bryan Scholars, one female and one male, are chosen for each incoming class. Marvin Ridge may nominate up to three students. Candidates are chosen on the basis of academic and personal excellence; strong promise of significant impact in their classes and in their lives on campus; and potential for success in Davidson’s NCAA Division I athletic program. The Davidson College admissions application must be submitted by the student prior to 5:00 pm, October 15th, 2015.

SunTrust Sweepstakes

$1000 awards; Deadline: Enter between September 15th, 2015 through May 15th, 2015. Free to enter and eligibility not based on GPA or financial need. Siemens Westinghouse Math, Science, and Technology Competition Scholarship

Amount: varies up to $100,000. Must develop and demonstrate talent for scientific research. See Mrs. Pierce in guidance or visit the website siemenscompetition.discoveryeducation.com for more information. Deadline for competition entry: September 22, 2015.

Colon Furr Memorial Nursing Scholarship ($600 Award)

Open to any permanent legal resident who resides in North Carolina and has been accepted to or is enrolled in a 1 year Licensed Practical Nurse program or who is enrolled in a 2, 3 or 4 year program that leads to certification as a Registered Nurse is eligible for this scholarship. The school must be in North Carolina. Scholarship applications may be obtained from any American Legion Post in NC, or by writing Department Headquarters at: The American Legion, Department of NC, PO Box 26657, Raleigh, NC 27611. Transcripts and three letters of recommendation are required to be submitted with application. Selection process will occur at the Fall Conference in October. Applications must be received at Department Headquarters on or before September 25th, 2015.

Wendy’s Heisman

This award is for male and female athletes with at least a B average (3.0). The first 25,000 students to apply will receive a Wendy’s gift card for $10. Applications due by October 2nd, 2015. Go to to apply!

University of Virginia – Jefferson Scholars Foundation

The goal of the foundation is to attract the most outstanding students in the nation and the world to the University, students who are extraordinary leaders, scholars, and citizens. Individual merit in these three areas is the sole criterion for selection. Financial need is not a consideration in making nominations, recommendations, or selections. The program covers the actual reported cost of attendance, including tuition, room, board, books and miscellaneous expenses. In order to be eligible, students must be nominated by their high school. Danforth Scholars Program - Washington University in St. Louis, MO

Amount: Partial or full tuition. Criteria: Interested students must possess a capacity for service and leadership, as well as academic excellence, and will embrace the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum. Undergraduates are considered from nominations only; students may not apply directly for the program. How to Apply: Must be nominated by the school, please see Mrs. Pierce in guidance by Friday, October 2nd, 2015 if interested.

The Levine Scholars Program - UNC Charlotte

The Levine Scholars Program takes the brightest, most capable students and gives them the tools, resources and environment they need to connect, transform and make a difference in the world. The four-year scholarship includes full tuition, room and board, a grant to implement a service project of the Scholar’s own design, and four summers of experiences that will develop leadership skills, social awareness, and an international perspective. The total value of this four-year package is estimated at $90,000 per in-state student and $137,000 per out-of-state student.

**To apply, students must be nominated online by their school counselor, principal or a teacher within their high school. There are no limitations to the number of students who can be nominated from each high school. Students are unable to nominate themselves for this program. Once students have been nominated by their school official, they will receive an email directing them to the Levine Scholars Portal where they will find the supplemental scholarship application and essay questions. Students should complete the “recommenders section” immediately so that emails can be sent to those people. The nominee's deadline for completing the online application and applying to UNC Charlotte is November 1st, 2015.

United States Senate Youth Program

Broadcast Education Association Two-Year/Community College Scholarship

BEA is the professional development association for professors, industry professionals and students involved in the teaching and research related to radio, television, and other electronic media. BEA administers a $1,500 scholarship to a deserving student who demonstrates excellent academic ability with the potential to become an outstanding electronic media professional. Eligible students must attend a BEA member institution and study in any field related to broadcasting.

**To apply, students must submit 4 copies of the application and recommendation waiver, as well as 3 letters of recommendation and an official transcript to Broadcast Education Association Scholarship Chairman, Dr. Peter Orlik. NC State University Centennial Scholarship – through College of Textiles

Every high school and home school can nominate up to two candidates for the Centennial Scholars Program. Please see Mrs. Pierce in guidance by October 16th if you are interested in being nominated! Full instructions will be emailed to every nominee. Between October 1st and December 1st, any student, not already nominated, who feels he/she meets or exceeds the selection criteria may nominate themselves by writing or e-mailing the College of Textiles to request access to the online application. Telephone calls will not constitute a self-nomination. There is no limit to the number of self-nominees coming from any one high school. Self-nominees should email for more information.

All completed Centennial Scholarship applications should be submitted online (or by hard copy) to the College of Textiles by 5:00pm on December 1st. Following an exhaustive selection process, finalists will be notified and invited to attend the Centennial Scholars weekend and interviews (typically in late January). The top ranked candidates will be offered NCTF Scholarship, and the next, NCTF Prestige Scholarships. Visit for more information.

Davidson College – John Montgomery Belk Scholarship

The scholarship can provide you comprehensive funding (tuition, fees, room and board) plus study stipends, and allows you great flexibility in the on- and off-campus opportunities you choose to explore.Requirements: High academics and above average test scores, exceptional promise in academics, character, leadership, athletics, and community service. Marvin Ridge High School may nominate up to two students. Nominees must submit a completed admission application no later than December 1, 2015. The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship

The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship is only available for students interested in attending UNC Chapel Hill. The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship award will be based largely on written work submitted by candidates. Artistic merit is the chief criterion of selection. Students who write poetry, fiction, plays, literary non-fiction (personal narratives, memoir, travel and nature essays, literary journalism, belles-lettres) are eligible. Multiple genre submissions are also encouraged, though submissions are limited to one application per student. Thomas Wolfe Scholarship applicants must apply to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by the University's October 15th, 2015 EARLY admission deadline and must meet all academic requirements for EARLY admission.

** The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship will accept applications beginning September 1st, 2015, with the deadline for submissions being November 15, 2015 (submissions must be postmarked by that date). Preliminary screening will be completed in early February 2016, with final screening concluding in early March. A minimum of three outstanding candidates will then be brought to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus for interviews, and a final selection of the next Thomas Wolfe Scholar will be made in early April 2016.For more information please visit .

National Young Arts Foundation

Horatio Alger Association Scholarships

Amount: Awards range from $2,500.00 to $20,000.00. Criteria: Enrolled full time as a high school senior and planning to enter a college in the U.S. Critical financial need, involvement in extra-curricular and community activities, demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming diversity, a minimum GPA of 2.0, and U.S. citizenship. NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing

Coca-Cola Scholars Program

Every year, 250 high school seniors are awarded $10,000 - $20,000 in scholarships from Coca-Cola. Eligible students must be current high school seniors, US Citizens or US Nationals, and must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and they must also plan to pursue a degree at an accredited US post-secondary institution.
