Job Description – CERTIFIED pROSTHETIST AND ORTHOTIST

1.CONTEXT

Non-governmental, non-religious, non-political and non-profit making, it works alongside people with disabilities, whatever the context, offering them assistance and supporting them in their efforts to become self-reliant.

2.Job Purpose

Under the responsibility of the Programme Manager/Coodinator the Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist will be responsible for supporting the partner organisation and its technical team to achieve the production and fitment targets of prosthetic, Orthotics, & other orthopaedic devices of standard quality as well as build the capacity of the local technicians and rehabilitation staffs as outlined in the project proposal.

Key areas

1. Procurement

a) Help and supervise in procurement of the equipment and materials as required for the workshop production

b) Plan & advice on installation of equipment in the workshop

2 Workshop set up

a) Set up the P&O workshop in Batticaloa at the old Jaipur Limb centre of EHED

b) Ensure the workshop is barrier-free for the easy access of people with disabilities

c) Ensure all the safety measures are taken care in the workshop for reducing hazardous consequence in operating various machinery and equipment

3. Workshop management

a)To implement workshop management and information system developed by SARC with all its related components in order to ensure an effective and efficient P&O workshop management

4. Training of Assistants

a)Identify and provide on-the-job training to local technicians in Prosthetics and Orthotics

b)Develop training curriculum for on the job training of local technicians

c)Evaluation of training

d)Orientation to community level workers in maintenance and repair of devices in the field

e)Train P&O Assistants in Workshop Management and information systems

5 Management of P&O Assistants

a)Develop job descriptions of the technicians

b)Develop plan of action for the technicians

c)Carry out induction and appraisal for the technicians

d)Monitoring of Assistants performance and production

6. Service delivery

a)To ensure all people with disabilities receive good quality and appropriate prosthetic and orthotic devices and services from the workshop as well as in the field

b)Maintain individual file for each person with disability receiving P&O devices and carry out regular follow up as per the requirement of the particular person

c)Maintain all records pertaining to service delivery of PWDs

7. Coordination with Physiotherapist

a)Maintain necessary coordination with Rehab Therapist in order to ensure P&O services are reaching out in to the community appropriately

b)Ensure required gait training is provided to the clients after prosthetic and orthotic fitments

c)Ensure that the clients receive enough therapy when required such as the release of contracture and healing of stump edema as required before the fitment of the devices

d)Work closely with the Physiotherapist in terms of patient treatment, patient circulation, etc.

8. Reporting

a) Produce updated reports in regular intervals as required by the project in terms of donor and HQs requirements.

9. Liaisoning

a) Liason with SARC Regional TC for various technical matters and training programmes from time to time as necessary

b) Coordinate with local suppliers and shopkeepers for materials and services required locally for the workshop

10. Representation

a) Represent HI in forums, workshops and conferences in the areas of Prosthetics and Orthotics as may be required from time to time

11. Accountancy & budget

a) Advice DP/Admin on various costs related to P&O materials, equipment, maintenance, training and service delivery

12. Capitalization

a) Capitalize on new areas of learning in P&O or any specific case histories for HI’s internal use and for outside publications when required

13. Monitoring & Evaluation

a) Carry out regular monitoring and evaluation of workshop activities, technicians’ performance and manufacture of devices

b) Make a final evaluation and end of mission report after the ECHO funding is completed
