____Math Focus: Have Your Child Make up a Zoo Animal Problem and Solve It

May 5, 2017

Dear Parents,

Next week, we will be discussing wild animals, their natural habitats, their food choices, and why we have zoos. We will also learn about zookeepers and their jobs.

____Math Focus: Have your child make up a zoo animal problem and solve it.

Ex. Two zebras are running. Three more zebras join them. How many zebras are running now? Then have your child solve the problem. (2+3=5) Let your child illustrate the work. Or your child might make up a subtraction story. Ex. Ten monkeys were swinging on a tree. Three jumped down. How many monkeys are still in the tree?

(10-3=7) Use the enclosed paper for the work. Have him/her use the enclosed rubric that tells what needs to be included in the problem. Return this to school.

____Retelling a story: Have your child retell the story The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss.

____Word Family list: Please let your child read the “-ig” word family list. Sign and return.

____Review: letters, letter sounds, letter chunks, rhyming words, opposites, identifying numbers to 20, counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, kindergarten sight words, writing numbers 0-20 correctly and sequentially without a pattern, writing capital and lowercase letters (Aa-Zz) correctly and without a model, adding to 10, subtracting from 10, review two and three-dimensional shapes and their descriptions, and anything that is marked a 1 or a 2 on the report card. The final evaluations for the last nine weeks report card are beginning! So please review with your child. Many of the children are forgetting things that they knew. We will not be sending home a “Communication Connection” this week.

____It is important that your child recognize the sight words quickly. All of the words that your child needs to know are on the list that was sent home a couple of weeks ago. Many of the children know all of the words. However, some of the children do not. Please help your child with the words he or she does not know.

____ Read five books (or 50 minutes) to your child.

I read the following books to my child:

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Reminders

Please talk with your child about making good choices, even when he/she is excited about summer vacation! We still have a lot of teaching, learning and assessing to do. I would hate for your child to not master a skill because of inattentiveness. This time is usually hard for the children (and their teachers!). They get “fussy” with their friends and are more interested in their social lives than their academic ones! Thank you so much for addressing this problem.
