Course Syllabi:

Welcome to Academic Intervention Services (AIS) for mathematics. The AIS program is designed to prepare students for the New York State Math Assessment given in April and to help students achieve success with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) mathematics curriculum. The course objectives will be met through direct instruction, individualized skill based practice, and small group work.

Course Objectives:

  1. To remediate as needed
  2. To reinforce basic concepts daily
  3. To increase student ability and confidence in mathematics
  4. To develop or enhance a system of organization and self-discipline

Course Outline:

Topics to be covered this year include:

  1. Ratios and Proportional Relationships
  2. The Number System
  3. Expressions and Equations
  4. Geometry
  5. Statistics and Probability

This course will also concentrate on problem solving and mathematical reasoning as well as communication, connections, and representation of mathematical concepts.

Supplies Needed:

  1. #2 pencils
  2. Student planner (used in all classes)
  3. A box of tissues
  4. Student folder (provided by teacher)

Class Expectations:

1. Be respectful at all times

2. Be on time, lateness policy will be applied

3. Sit in your assigned seat

4. There will be no food, drinks, or gum in class

5. Raise your hand to be called on during class discussions

6. Stay on task throughout class

7. All rules in the student handbook apply while you are in this class

8. Do not misuse school property (ex. Do not write on desks)

Consequences:

  1. Warning
  2. Teacher lunch detention
  3. Phone call home
  4. Referral

Grades:

Grades will be given every five weeks. This is a pass/fail course. Assessment will be based on the student’s overall performance. Students will be evaluated on a daily basis, receiving a number grade from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). Daily points will be given based on student being prompt, prepared, polite, and productive.

Homework:

There will be no homework assigned in AIS. However students will have regularly assigned homework given by their team math teacher. It is very important that students try every homework assignment and make corrections during their math class. Students should seek assistance on their homework when necessary.
