Textbook Beginning Algebra with Application by Aufman, Barker, Lockwood, 7ed.

Course Coverage: We will cover Chapters 2-11

Course Description: This course will cover real numbers, polynomials, rational expressions, first-degree equations and inequalities, graphs or equations, linear systems or equations, exponents, and radicals, quadratic equations.

Students Learning Outcome: Create, analyze and interpret linear models of real world applications.

Prerequisite: Math 40 or equivalent with a grade of Credit or ‘C’ or higher or satisfactory completion of the Math Placement Process.

Required Material: Graph paper, pencils, pens, folders and textbook.

Homework: It will be assigned from the text or given as handouts. Read the textbook discussion on each topic, ideally before it is covered in class. Homework should be submitted on standard size paper, STAPLED, with your name on the first page. Late homework will not be accepted. Homework assignment will be worth 2-25 points. Answers alone are not sufficient, must show work step by step, neatly. Lowest homework will be dropped when determining your final grade in the course.

Group Work: It will be assigned from text or given as handouts. It will be worth 2-15pts each.

Quizzes: Each quiz will be worth 5-35 points (15-35min). We will have at least two quizzes per week. No make up quizzes will be given.

Exams: We will have 2 exams each worth 150 points and a comprehensive final worth 200 points. NO MAKEUP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN, unless emergency occurs. A doctors note will be required if

the emergency is illness. You must notify me 12 hours in advance, and be prepared to take the make up as soon as possible. Makeup exams will not be given after the exams have been returned to the class.

Participation & Attendance: 2% of your final grade

Grading: Grades: (90 -100]%=A, (80- 89]%=B, (70-79]% = C, (60-69]%=D , 59% and below is F.

Academic Dishonesty: If you are caught participating in an act of academic dishonesty, e.g. cheating, you will receive a disciplinary F in the course and your name will be reported to the appropriate academic dean.

Students’ Responsibility:

·  Failure to bring your textbook may also count as non-participation in class.

·  If you stop attending this class, it is your responsibility to go to the admissions office and withdraw from the course. Failure to do so may result is a grade of F in this course.

·  This course requires your full attention during class time. It is your job to learn the material. Part of this job will require you the following: to participate in class, seek the appropriate help as soon as you encounter difficulties, ask relevant questions when you do not understand the material, and submit assignments on time.

·  Should you miss a class it is your responsibility to to obtain the lecture notes from a fellow student (nNot the instructor) to find out what was missed.

·  No eating during lectures. Drinks are OK

·  No recordable devices.

Behavior in class:

·  All electronic devices such as cell phones, pagers, etc must be in non-audio mode form (silent) while you are in the classroom. Your conduct in this classroom is expected to be respectful of other students and the instructor at all times. Disruptive behavior will result in removal from the class. First disruptive behavior will deduct points up to 25 points, second time 50 points, third time you are out of my class.

Attendance:

·  Regular attendance of entire classes is important for success in the course. Let me know if you are going to be absent, or will not finish the course.

·  Arriving late or leaving early is 1/2 absence and or 5 to 10 points deduction.

·  It is UextremelyU important to attend class. After 3 absences you may be dropped from the class. This is because it’s summer class.

How to get HELP in this course:

·  It is a good idea to form study groups outside of class.

·  Exchange phone number and or e-mail address with at least two of your classmates.

·  Go to the Learning Center in the lower level of the east side of the library building. ( There is a link on my website for this)

Last day to drop with a refund and last day to add(instructor initiated) - July 2nd

Last day to drop without a “W”- July 11th

Last day to drop with a “W” – July 30th

FINAL EXAM –AUGUST 7TH –SAME ROOM FIRST TWO HOURS OF CLASS.

UExpect to spend 5-15 hours per week in homework and study for this class.
