MayoHigh School

Herr Thompson / 2005 - 2006

Materials/Supplies: Please bring the following items daily:

loose-leaf paper (at LEAST spiral-bound with perforations, please)

3-ring binder (1-inch?)

pencil

pen (blue/black)

colored pen/marker (red, orange, purple, green, thick blue, thick black)

I suggest that you keep your notes/binder divided into 3 sections:

  • Vocabulary / Wortschatz
  • Grammar / Grammatik
  • Culture/Misc. / Kultur und Sonstiges

Forbidden Items: The following items are restricted or forbidden:

Calculators – Not allowed during class time.

Personal Music Devices/Headphones – Not allowed during class time.

Cell Phones – No usage during school hours. You are responsible for your phone’s ring settings.

Food/Candy – Not allowed during class time or in hallways. Gum is discouraged.

Beverages* - Not in the room or hallways. With exception of pre-designated days, no juice, pop, or any sugar-containing beverage is allowed in the classroom. *Water is always welcome.

Hats – Not in the building. (No “security hats”, even!)

Inappropriate Clothing – Not in the building. see the student handbook (page 12)

Backpacks – Not in the aisles or traffic areas. It must fit underneath your desk space. Your materials must also be out and ready as well. This relaxed rule is on a temporary trial basis through September. At that time, the possession of backpacks will be re-assessed and could change.

Tardiness/Punctuality: Germans are almost never late! Tardiness here is strongly discouraged! Students not in their seats when attendance is taken will be marked as tardy. Three unexcused tardies allows the same consequences as one unexcused absence, in conjunction with school and district policy.

Passes: Hall/Library/Restrooms: There will be re-usable hall/bathroom passes (provided by the school) here in the room. You need permission to leave the room. If I’m busy, please wait until I am free or if it’s an immediate need give me a nod/wave indicating that you are leaving the room. Regarding restroom usage: Realistically prepare yourself for classes before school, during non-instructional hours, lunch and so on. Please leave only for restroom emergencies.

Grading Scale: 100-90% A / 89.99-80% B / 79.99-70% C / 69.99-60% D / 59.99-0% F

Quizzes/Tests/Extra Credit: Tests are announced. Quizzes will often be unannounced and will generally be listening-oriented. Extra credit is extremely rare – spend your time on daily assignments and studying instead!

Final tests are given at the end of each semester and are cumulative. Year-end semester finals assess the entire year’s material.

Make-up/Late Work: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out from what was taught/learned, including notes, assignments, due dates, and test dates. Refer to the make-up binder near the assignment stackers, or ask a classmate. Worksheets can be found in the “ABSENT OUT” stackers. Quizzes and tests missed will likely need to be taken outside of instruction time at an agreed-upon time.

Assignments are due at the time they are requested turned in. For students who are:

  • absent and excused, the assignment is due within two school days.
  • absent and unexcused, the assignment receives no credit.
  • present but with an unfinished/not handed in, the student should turn the assignment in within 24 hours to receive 75% credit.
  • (Total points possible - mistakes x .75 = late assignment’s value)
  • After the 24-hour period, no credit will be given. (continued…)

Make-up/Late Work (Continued):

Again, assessment make-ups will need to be scheduled with Herr Thompson.

Turn any separate or individual assignments into the appropriate “STUDENT IN” tray, according to your hour. Please do not lay them on my desk.

Note: Every assignment not turned in with the rest of the class’, must include your name, hour, and date/time turned in, along with a note -- “absent” if you were absent or “late” if the assignment is simply being turned in late. Please use the little late-assignment info sheets to staple to your assignment. Assignments not labeled will be counted as late.

Plagiarism/Cheating: No credit will be awarded on work where the student’s work is not their own but is presented as such. Further disciplinary action may be considered and warranted.

Class Participation: Class participation may be a part of your overall grade. Points may be awarded in relation to your level of participation. This need not include an abundance of speaking German (depending on the class level), but each and every student must find some unique way to contribute positively and participate.

Attitude/Behavior: I don’t dictate who and how you are (to a point, of course), but I still hold high expectations of all students. This includes:

maturity

respect for others and property

maintaining a positive attitude in class

a willingness to keep an open mind

Along those lines, here are some specific rules to live by in my class and in life:

Please do not talk while others are addressing the class.

Please do not speak negatively about others.

Please be appropriate.

If you ever have concerns, please see me between classes or before or after school. You are always welcome to stop by.

Educational Expectations: Participate. Work hard. Try. Try new things. Learn. Enjoy!

I would also ask that you provide me your own e-mail address if I wish to contact you (typically as a whole class) outside of school.
