TASK 4

Read the text below. Match choices (A – H) to (1 – 6). There are two choices you don’t need to use

A week has 168 hours. If you sleep eight hours a day, that leaves 112 hours per week of active time in your life. If you work about 50 hours a week, that is almost half of the active time you have available to you. This is a very significant portion of your life that you spend working.

1 ( ) One obvious answer is that you need to provide for yourself and you family. But there has to be more to work than just making money. Many billionaires, like Bill Gates, Larry Ellison and Warren Buffet, spend a significant amount of their time working, probably more than most people. And yet, they don’t need any money. Work can be anything from being a volunteer, to being a high-powered executive, and anything in between. Let’s look at the advantages work can give us.

2 ( ) Many people go through their working life thinking about retirement. They think about the day when they will just be able to sit back, relax and take it easy. But when the day arrives when you finally get to retirement an interesting phenomenon happens to many people. They enjoy the first few months of their newly found freedom and stress-free living, but after a while they start losing their sense of purpose. Their work gave them a sense of accomplishment that they now miss, and they start to feel worthless.

3 ( ) In many lines of work, you have to deal with people and their personalities, egos, beliefs, cultures, politics, habits, and all of the struggles and joys that make up the human existence. You also face conflicts and hard choices. Sometimes you even have to deal with difficult ethical issues. As you gain experience and mature in your work, you develop character. You learn how to deal with different types of people and different situations.

4 ( ) Everyone has unique talents and gifts. Some are obvious to you. Others become apparent as you start applying them in your work activities. Work allows you to discover your strengths and weaknesses. And discovering and using your talents can be a very satisfying and rewarding experience. Without work your talents stay dormant and do not find a way to flourish. It is a waste of your gifts that could otherwise have been put to good use.

5 ( ) When you do a good job you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. Being able to work and serve, in whatever capacity, is an honourable activity.

6 ( ) But I am yet to see a successful person that does not do any type of work. Work is the very essence of what success is all about.

A Work is honourable.

B To sum it up, there are many interpretations of what success is.

C So the question you must ask is “Why do you do it?”

D Work allows you to put your talents to good use.

E Work gives you a sense of purpose.

F The main purpose of work is making money.

G Some people go through life resenting and avoiding work.

H Work is a means to develop character.

TASK 5

You are going to read a magazine article about a business meeting. Parts of the article are mixed. Put them in the correct order. Write the appropriate letter (A-J) in the boxes after the text (0-9)

A Business Meeting

A I naturally thought long and hard about what to wear. In the fashion business, of course, you were expected to be smart. The question was whether to be businesslike, or fashionable.

B In the end, I decided to wear my most expensive clothes. These were a pair of boots, a pair of fashion jeans which had cost me a week’s salary, a hand-made sweater and a coat. I was not very satisfied with my appearance, but at least everything was new and expensive.

C The job sounded interesting: with a fashion house in the city centre. The telephone conversations I had had with them were relaxed and friendly, and the letter from the boss had also been a friendly one.

D Then he caught sight of me. He shook his head apologetically, and smiled. Sorry, he said, the house rules were quite clear. No one in jeans would be admitted.

E There was something else to think about, too. I had to get there by train and bus. The journey was over two hours, and that affects the clothes you choose.

F He had invited me to visit the office and join some of them for lunch. The appointment was at twelve o’clock.

G The boss was just as friendly as his letter had been. We looked round the offices, chatted about the business, and finally went out for lunch.

H I led the way out, and we started looking for somewhere else to eat.

I In fact, I realized on my arrival that I had chosen exactly the wrong clothes.

The men in the office were wearing dark suits and ties. The women were in

business suits.

J They had chosen a smart restaurant nearby, where the boss was quite well known. The restaurant manager greeted him by name.

A Magic Job

Ken Flannagan began his career in the magic industry only two years ago, but he has already managed to make a name for himself. When he first started out as a trainee magician at the age of fifteen, his parents weren’t very trilled about it. They thought that he wouldn’t be able to earn a decent living and they tried to convince him otherwise.

Luckily, Ken’s mentor (the well-known magician Malcolm Potts) taught him well. Malcolm insisted that he practiced day and night. Perfecting his own tricks and inventing new ones was the key to Ken’s success. Soon, he was participating in some of his mentor’s shows and then worked on his own.

He is now a performer at children’s parties and other events throughout the city. Most recently, just last October, he won first prize at the annual Junior Magician’s Convention in Winneapolis. Since then, he has been earning $400 per performance, which you have to admit isn’t too bad for someone who hasn’t even graduated from school yet!

What does this teach us? Sometimes you just have to take a chance! Ken often says, “If you’re determined, you can be successful, so don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do”. We’re not surprised!

  1. Ken is not popular at all at the moment.
  2. Ken’s parents expected him to make a lot of money from becoming a magician.
  3. Ken’s parents didn’t agree with his choice of job.
  4. Malcolm advised him to practice a lot.
  5. Ken didn’t practice his tricks because he was already very good.
  6. Ken has always walked by himself.
  7. The Junior Magician’s Convention in Winneapolis is originated every year.
  8. Ken is earning a lot of money for somebody of his age.
  9. Ken has stopped going to school.
  10. According to Ken, anyone can achieve anything they want in life.

JOAN OF ARC

It wasn’t easy being a girl in the 1400s, but Joan of Arc didn’t let that stop her from becoming a national heroine in France (and, later, a saint). Joan was a peasant girl who led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Year’s War after claiming to have visions from God. She was later captured by the English and executed for heresy, all before the age of 20. About 500 years later she was made a saint by Pope Benedict XV.

King Tutankhamun (popularly referred to as King Tut) was an Egyptian pharaoh between 1333 BC – 1324 BC.
