Course Description:

In this course we will explore a variety of science topics primarily focused in the Earth, Space, and Physical sciences as determined by the Maryland State Curriculum for 6th grade. Employing the scientific method, students will explore hands-on activities and real-life scenario science lab investigations. Using various lab tools safely and accurately, students will collect organize, interpret, and then communicate the data in tables, graphs, and creative presentations.

Explanation of Assessments/ Grading:

(Follows the QACPS grading policy for 6th grade):

It is expected that students will apply language mechanics and usage skills in all written work. Attention should be given to correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and word usage. Language usage/mechanics will be factored into grades.

30% Summative Assessment - May include major projects, chapter tests, mid-term, and final exams (May/June).

60% Formative Assessment - Class work, daily or weekly assignments, quizzes, BCR's or other writing assignments, lab reports, or mini-projects.

10% Homework - Independent practice completed outside of class.

QACPS Grading Policy:
A superior performance 90-100%
B above average performance 80-89%
C average performance 70-79%
D below average performance 60-69%
E failing to demonstrate sufficient understanding of enough of the information <60%

Retakes:
Students may retake or revise summative assessments when scoring 69% or lower to achieve a maximum score of 70%. Formative assessments below 70% will be revised by the student and returned to the teacher.

Homework Policy:
Homework is a very important part of a child's education. Homework is given to reinforce
what has been taught in the class and/or review material covered in class. To get full credit on homework, the work must be turned in to the teacher at the beginning of class, on the day that it is due. All homework is checked, graded, and given back to the student.

Missed Work

  • It is the students’ responsibilityto inquire about any work missed. Assignments of the day will be posted on my website so that they may be viewed and downloaded if needed. Missed work will be due depending on the length of the students’ absence.
  • Missing work must be turned in within 3 days of the due date. If the work is turned in within 3 days a grade of no less than 50% will be assigned. After 3 days the assignment will be entered in the gradebook as a 40%. (County policy)
  • If an assignment is missed due to an absence then the student will have three (3) days to turn the assignment for full credit. After 3 days the county grading policy will be in effect.

Textbooks/ Materials:

Holt Science and Technology Earth Science, by Holt, Reinhart and Winston

Holt Science and Technology Life Science, by Holt, Reinhart and Winston

Holt Science and Technology Physical Science, by Holt, Reinhart and Winston

Expectations:

1. Please come to each class prepared and ready to learn. Each day you should leave with something new!

2. Please have all necessary materials with you each day. It will be tough to focus on what is being taught if you are trying to find a pen, pencil, etc.

3. Please give your best effort. There will be times when you might not totally understand a concept, but don’t take the easy way out. Do your best to come up with an answer. Only then will I be able to help you fix your mistake. Read this quote about effort: “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”- Vince Lombardi

4. Please do not be a distraction to the others around you.

5. Please ask for help if you need it. I know that sometimes asking for help can be tough, but I can’t help you fix what I don’t know needs fixing. Contact me via email or phone.Do your homework each day. Homework is practice and needs to be taken seriously. Without practice you will never be able to fully master a concept.

6. Be on time- our science classroom is separated from the rest of the 6th grade team so you will need to move quickly and quietly through the hallway, without stopping to chat, get a drink, or use the restroom.

7. Be respectful- of each other, of yourself, of materials, and of your teachers. Violations will result in disciplinary action.

8. Be safe- Failure to follow appropriate safety rules or misconduct during a lab activity will result in immediate disciplinary action and may require removal from the lab.

9. No food or drink- this includes gum. You are not permitted to consume anything in a science lab classroom at any time.

10. Restroom/ Drink privileges- You may ask to leave the classroom only at appropriate times. If permission is granted you are required use the sign out form and take a pass with you.

CONSEQUENCES: (The order can change depending on the infraction)

  1. Warning
  2. Lunch Detention
  3. Phone call to parent (Level 1 Referral)
  4. Conference requested (Level 1 Referral)
  5. Level II Referral-major offenses (such as fighting, bullying, harassment, etc.) and non-compliance.

Mobile Learning Devices:

I believe the infusion of mobile learning devices can be a great benefit to learning. You are encouraged to bring your MLD with you each class. Before you do, be sure to complete the appropriate paperwork and have it approved by Dr. Holocker.
