Course Description:

The curriculum of AB is specified by the College Board and agrees with the curriculum of the first one and one-half semesters of calculus in most colleges. AB calculus does not include the re-teaching of pre-calculus in that the students are expected to have retained this information. Some review material will be available if needed. The student who takes this course should do so with the attitude of taking the AP test and receiving college credit.

Content: Elementary functions - properties of functions, properties of particular functions, limits, continuity, statements and applications Differential calculus - the derivative, applications of the derivative. Integral calculus: Anti-derivatives, applications of anti-derivatives, techniques of integration.

In AP Calculus, we will approach every concept (and you must master every concept) from four different perspectives:

Analytic - This is the "x's and y's" equation manipulation that most students think of when they think "math."

Numeric - You have to be able to apply calculus concepts to numerical data (lists and tables of numbers).

Graphical - You need to be able to interpret, manipulate, and draw graphs relating to calculus concepts.

Verbal - You must be able to explain calculus concepts in clear, concise, correct English.

And, you have to be able to do all four of these things with or without a calculator.

Homework: Homework is assigned daily and requires more time and thinking than any previous math course. It will be checked in the beginning of the class in the following class period for the quality of the trials. Occasionally homework will be collected/graded or homework quizzes will be assigned without previous notification Expect to have approximately 3 hours of home-work every week including pre/post reading and problems solving.

Deadlines: Unless extreme extenuating circumstances have been reported and verified, students will have no more than one week to turn in late work and still receive credit. The maximum grade allowable will be reduced each day that the assignment is overdue.

Everyday Required Materials:

Composition Notebook

Lined paper

Writing Utensils (Pencils, blue/black pens and highlighters

T1-83/T1-84/T1-89 Graphing Calculator (Must have your own)

Math Binder Section (in your ESAT binder) with three dividers labeled as:

  • Do Now/Practice Section
  • Homework Section
  • Practice Worksheets/Practice Tests

Grading:

The academic grade has different components: Class room discussions/seminars, tests, quizzes, major homework assignments, and projects/challenge problems.

Quizzes: There will be frequent (approximately one per week) quizzes.

Test Grades: There will be a test at the end of each unit. Each test will mimic the format of the AP AB Calculus test (except for length), with a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. One test during each unit will be a calculator-active test and one test will be a no-calculator test. Test dates will be announced several days in advance.

(ONLY ONE RETAKE)/Semester

To be eligible for the retake, ALL of the following steps need to be included

-Complete all HW assignments leading up to the assignment in question

-Complete error analysis of assignment to be retaken

Projects/Challenge Problems/Labs: There are a wide variety of lab projects and challenge problems available to students at any time. Each student should always be working on a project or challenge problem. Progress on these challenges counts toward the academic grade because they reflect the student's achievement.

Extra Sessions: (100% attendance is expected)

Thursday’s (3:30-4:30 P.M): Starting November 2017.

Saturday Sessions (9:00 AM- 12:00) starting second semester January 2018

You should not miss any of these sessions. No re-teaching will be done for those session’s exceptions of emergency ONLY.
