The Construction Systems business of BASF Corporation previously conducted business as Degussa, Inc. Building Systems. The Admixture Systems business of BASF Corporation previously conducted business as Degussa Admixtures, Inc. and Master Builders, Inc.

On January 1, 2014 BASF launched the Master Builders Solutions brand in North America. With Master Builders Solutions, BASF combined its existing construction brands such as Master Builders, Chemrex, Sonneborn, MBT and others that have established a legacy of innovation, to create one unparalleled, globally recognized brand for its solutions to the construction industry.

This new BASF harmonized naming system, presents simpler, more logical and easier to understand product names. Each new name reflects an application property or function.

The purpose of this guide specification is to assist the specifier in developing a project specification for the use of BASF building systems’ products. it is not intended to be a “stand alone” document, nor to be copied directly into a project manual. This guide specification will need to be carefully reviewed for APPROPRIATENESS for the given project and edited accordingly to comply with project-specific requirements.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1SUMMARY

1.2SUBMITTALS

  1. Comply with Section [01 33 00] [______].
  2. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's technical data sheets and LEED product information for each product.
  3. Submit list of project references as documented in this Specification under Quality Assurance Article. Include contact name and phone number of person charged with oversight of each project.
  4. Quality Control Submittals:
  5. Provide protection plan of surrounding areas and non-work surfaces.

1.3QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Comply with Section [01 40 00] [______].
  2. Qualifications:
  3. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company with minimum 15 years of experience in manufacturing of specified products.
  4. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company shall be ISO 9001:2000 Certified.
  5. Applicator Qualifications: Company with minimum of 5 years experience in application of specified products on projects of similar size and scope, and is acceptable to product manufacturer.
  6. Successful completion of a minimum of 5 projects of similar size and complexity to specified Work.
  7. Field Sample:
  8. Install at Project site or pre-selected area of building an area for field sample, as directed by Architect.
  9. Provide mockup of at least 100 sf (9.3 m2) to include surface preparation, sealant joint, and juncture details and allow for evaluation of repellent performance and finish.
  10. Conduct absorption test on cured field sample. Adjust application until required repellent performance is achieved.
  11. Apply material in accordance with manufacturer’s written application instructions.
  12. Manufacturer’s representative or designated representative will review technical aspects; surface preparation, application, and workmanship.
  13. Field sample will be standard for judging workmanship on remainder of Project.
  14. Maintain field sample during construction for workmanship comparison.
  15. Do not alter, move, or destroy field sample until Work is completed and approved by Architect.
  16. Obtain Architect’s written approval of field sample before start of material application, including approval of aesthetics, color, texture, and appearance.

1.4DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Comply with Section [01 60 00] [______].
  2. Comply with manufacturer’s ordering instructions and lead-time requirements to avoid construction delays.
  3. Deliver materials in manufacturer's original, unopened, undamaged containers with identification labels intact.
  4. Store in unopened containers in clean, dry area between 35 degrees F (2 degrees C) and 110degrees F (43 degrees C).

1.5PROJECT CONDITIONS

  1. Environmental Requirements:
  2. Minimum application temperature is 20 degrees F (minus 7 degrees C) and rising.
  3. Do not apply in rain or when rain is expected within 4 hours. Do not apply above 96 degrees F (35 degrees C) or below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C) or when temperatures are expected to fall below 20 degrees F (minus 7 degrees C) within 12 hours.

  2. Specifications and Drawings are based on manufacturer's proprietary literature from BASF. Other manufacturers shall comply with minimum levels of materialand detailing indicated in Specifications or on Drawings. Architect will be sole judge of appropriateness of substitutions.

2.2MATERIALS

  1. Clear, breathable, high-performance, 100 percent silane sealer for protecting new and existing concrete surfaces. Penetrates deeply, sealing out water, chloride ions, and acids, preventing damage from freeze/thaw cycles.
  2. Acceptable Product: MasterProtect H 1000 (formerly Hydrozo 100) by BASF.
  3. Sealer shall have the following minimum performance:
  4. Compliance: Alberta DOT, Type 1c.
  5. Silane Content by Weight: 100 percent.
  6. Penetration, average depth, depending upon substrate: 0.35 inch (9 mm).
  7. Surface Appearance after Application: Unchanged.
  8. Flash Point, SETA: Greater than 165 degrees F (62.7 degrees C).
  9. Waterproofing Repellency afterHeavy Abrasion,Alberta DOT penetrating sealer, Type 1c, 0.35 w/c ratio: 83.5 percent.
  10. Water Weight Gain, NCHRP 244 Series II Cube Test:
  11. 250 sf per gal (6.1 m2/L): 90 percent reduction.
  12. 400 sf per gal (9.8 m2/L): 85 percent reduction.
  13. Absorbed Chloride, NCHRP 244 Series II Cube Test:
  14. 250 sf per gal (6.1 m2/L): 96 percent reduction.
  15. 400 sf per gal (9.8 m2/L): 87 percent reduction.
  16. Absorbed Chloride, NCHRP 244 Series IV Southern Climate: 98 percent reduction.
  17. VOC Content:
  18. 3.05 lbs per gal (365 g/L), less water and exempt solvents.

PART 3 - eXECUTION

3.1EXAMINATION

  1. Comply with Section [01 70 00] [______].

3.2SURFACE PREPARATION

  1. Protection: Protect plant life and surfaces to remain uncoated during application. Use drop cloths or masking as required.
  2. Prepare surfaces in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

edit note: Surface cleanliness is critical for blemish or stain-free results, especially on light colored or white surfaces. Concrete should be cured to 80% of design strength prior to application of Sealer.

  1. Verify substrate has properly cured. Surfaces shall be clean and structurally sound. Remove dust, dirt, oil, grease, chemical films, coatings and other contaminants before application.
  2. Do not apply sealer if standing water is visible on surface to be treated.

3.3application

  1. Apply sealer in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Stir material thoroughly before and during application.
  3. Apply sealer with flooding action. Eliminate ponding.
  4. Apply even distribution of sealer.

3.4PROTECTION

  1. Protect sealer from damage during construction.
