OFFICE CLEAN-OUT TIPS and HOW TO's

Plan Ahead

To requestcardboard boxes, extra plastic bags or recycling bins, blitz or call John Leigh (5-7719) with advance notice. If John is away, call the Housekeeping Office (5-5912) for bags or the WasteManagementCenter (5-4362) to have boxes set aside for you. Small amounts of empty boxes are also available in the REDU Center (B1L2). Full bags and boxes of recyclable stuff, magazines and books can be placed beside recycling bins for evening pickup. For more than 15 bags/boxes, a blue cart can also be delivered for the clean out day.

Separate theRECYCLABLE STUFFinto plastic bags (using your recycling bin as a hard shell) or boxes. Please do not fill bags to the point that they will break the bag or are too heavy to lift.

White Paper - all paper that is white, regardless of colored inks, and envelopes without windows or labels. Please remove paper from binders.

Mixed Paper - glossy, colored, magazines, junk mail, manila, "post-it" notes, folders, newspapers, boxboard, NCR, ream wrapper, and easel pad.

Bottles & Cans - commingled beverage containers.

Odd-ball Stuff - scrap metal, batteries, toner cartridges, printer ribbons, ink jet cartridges, transparencies, computer CD's. (All of these go to the REDUCenter.) Please label the closed bag if it isn't obvious.

TRASH goes in the trash can.

It is all the stuff neither you nor anyone else would want, items too well used to still be useful, non-recyclable materials, or plain old regular trash.

Please take the time to pull out the good items, box them up and label “For Reuse.”

REUSABLE (small) STUFF goes to the REDUCenter (B1L2, across from Patient Elevators)

Binders, folders, hanging files, desktop organizers, calculators etc. go in here.

Please take the time to make it reusable and separate it out from the other stuff into a box.

BOOKS and Journals - Recyclable or Reusable

Softcover - if less than one inch thick and less than 10books, put in with mixed paper recycling. If there is a large amount or the books are thicker than an inch, a separate box needs to be used.

Hardcover - Box separately. Boxes should be sized and filled such that one person can easily handle them. Please assume that if you can't safely lift a box, your housekeeper can't either.

Medical books can go to the Medical Equipment & Supplies Recovery Program if they are less than ten years old, still relevant, or sometimes even older books if still current info (e.g., anatomy). Clearly label these boxes accordingly.

SURPLUS FURNITURE and Equipment- Get it back in circulation!

DHMC Trading Post - This is for good furniture etc., which can be reused in-house. Send a Blitzmail message to “Trading Post” specifying what is available. If the furniture or equipmentis not taken by another office, it can be transportedto the “2-10 tunnel” by your staff or by placing a work order through Engineering.

NOT ACCEPTABLE - Hazardous items must not be put in clean-out containers or bags.

Contact Hazardous Materials Specialist (5-7233) for assistance/information and disposal.
