Music and Creative Arts at the Martin High School
We pride ourselves in offering a music curriculum that enables our young learners to explore, develop and excel in their passions and creativity. At the Martin High School, we strongly believe that all learners have the fundamental right to study the Arts at KS3 - not only to inspire their creative energy and passion, but also to prepare them for the challenges of post-education.
We aim to support this in music lessons by offering a diverse range of musical instruments and styles: from Chinese and Indian Music, modern-day pop icons, to Garage Band work and solo compositions, we aim to fully-enrich our learners with musical understanding, experience and application. Year 7 and Year 8 pupils currently have one lesson per week of music over the entire academic year, with our Year 9 students having 12 weeks of three lessons per week, on rotation.
We have a full class-suite of acoustic guitars and keyboards, two electric pianos, a fully-equipped drum kit and a range of brass instruments for use within lessons. We are also currently in the process of purchasing a set of Timpani drums to help further enrich our curriculum.
Whilst we are currently delivering a KS3 curriculum only this year, we have all necessary equipment and resources to deliver a full GCSE music course also: we have four practice rooms in total, with the largest of these housing 15 Mac computers equipped with Sibelius software and an impressive recording studio adjoined on to the room. One of our key aims is to continue to grow and develop the music department, so that we can once again offer KS4 music to our young learners.
In terms of extra-curricular opportunities, we currently work closely with Soar Valley Music Centre in order to offer peripatetic lessons. Currently, we offer guitar, keyboard, drumming, saxophone and singing lessons to our learners across the week and have our own school rock band. We have also been involved in projects such as Chinese Musical workshops and the highly-publicised ‘Jazz Ticket Project’.
The Music Department itself sits within the Creative Arts faculty, which comprises of 2D and 3D art, Drama and Music. As such, there is wide range of opportunities throughout the academic year for collaboration and celebration of the arts. We very recently launched the Christmas production of ‘Oliver! the musical’ to parents at Christmas, as well as our extremely popular ‘Summer Nights’ (Grease) production last summer.
The Music Department at the Martin High School therefore acts as the creative lynchpin of the school; it offers a huge and diverse opportunity for the Subject Leader to impart their creative vision within the school - directing the next phase of our musical provision and helping to grow and develop the department even further towards its full potential.
