MARKET REPORT : SALE 19TH/21ST MAY 2009

Western Teas

Select Best BOPs shed Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-, other good invoices declined by a similar margin, Below Best and plainer varieties too were lower by Rs.10/-. Select Best BOPFs were lower by Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-, other good invoices easier by Rs.10/-, Below Best and plainer varieties declined by a similar margin on average. Select Best Medium BOPs were easier by Rs.10/-, whilst BOPFs too eased by a similar margin.

Nuwara Eliya Teas

A few brighter BOPs maintained, whilst others were easier by Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-. BOPFs too declined by Rs.10/- to Rs.15/- on average.

Uva Teas

Coloury BOPs declined Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-, whilst others lost Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-. BOPFs eased Rs.10/- to Rs.15/- on average.

CTC Teas

Low Grown PF1s were firm to Rs.10/- dearer, whilst BP1s maintained last levels. High & Medium PF1s appreciated by Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-, whilst BP1s were irregularly dearer.

Low Growns

Lower demand. Select Best OP1s shed Rs.20/- to Rs.30/-, balance too were lower by Rs.15/- to Rs.20/-. Select Best BOP1s declined Rs.15/- to Rs.20/-, the Best types were mainly firm, Below Best and poor sorts were irregularly lower by Rs.10/-. Select Best OP/OPAs eased Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-, Best types too tended low by Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-, Below Best and poor sorts maintained last levels. Select Best Pekoe1s once again met with excellent demand and appreciated Rs.10/- on average, however the Best and Below Best varieties declined Rs.20/- to Rs.30/-, poor sorts too tended low by Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-. Select Best bold Pekoes shed Rs.20/- to Rs.40/-, balance too declined sharply by Rs.40/- to Rs.60/-. Select Best and Best BOP.SP declined Rs.20/- to Rs.30/-, the balance too declined by a similar margin and at times more as the sale progressed. BOPs also were lower by Rs.20/- to Rs.30/- and more as the sale progressed. FBOP/FBOPF1s shed Rs.20/- to Rs.30/- and more towards the latter part of the sale. Tippy varieties declined fairly sharply on last levels.

Off Grades

Select Best liquoring Fngs1s were lower by Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-, Best and Below Best types were lower by Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-, poorer sorts too were lower by Rs.5/-. BPs appreciated by Rs.10/- to Rs.15/- and more at times. Select Best BMs appreciated Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-, whilst the Best and the Below Best types appreciated by Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-. All Low Grown Fngs appreciated Rs.10/-. Select Best and Best BOP1As declined Rs.20/- to Rs.30/-, whilst the Below Best and poorer sorts appreciated Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-.

Dust

Select Best Dust1s were firm. Best and Below Best types gained Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-, whilst the poorer sorts were irregular. All secondary Dusts gained Rs.5/- to Rs.10/-. Best Low Grown Dust/Dust1s were firm, whilst the balance gained Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-.

WESTERNS

Dry weather conditions continued in the Western sector. No rainfall has been recorded from Agrapatana, Bogawantalawa and Talawakelle planting districts, although light showers were reported from Watawala district towards the end of the week.

NUWARA ELIYA’S

Nuwara Eliya and Kandapola continued to experience dry and warm conditions throughout the week

UVA’S

Uva’s too followed a similar trend with warm conditions, although light scattered showers were reported in some parts of the Uva district.

LOW GROWNS

Galle district experienced useful evening showers throughout the week, whilst Ratnapura and Deniyaya experienced dry and warm conditions.

CROPS

Crops from Westerns and Nuwara Eliya continued to decline whilst Uva’s continued with a moderate crop. Low Grown crops were moderate.

MOMBASA

SALE NO.19 – 18TH /19TH MAY 2009

There was strong and improved general demand for the 110,374 packages (7.03 million kilos) on offer closely following quality.

Brighter BP1s were well absorbed at firm to USC32 dearer but a few invoices were discounted by upto USC4 while mediums were irregular ranging between firm to USC36 dearer to easier by USC18 to 20; lower mediums saw good absorption and varied between USC7 to 16 dearer to easier by upto USC6. Well made plainer types were fully firm to USC14 dearer but others were discounted by a similar margin.
