Workers of most Plantations in the High and Medium elevations will celebrate ‘Diwali’ this coming weekend. A very special occasion, the Festival of Light, has become one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the Plantation sector. This day holds great significance to the workers with very many of the workers attending religious functions. We have had reports of weather being conducive for growth in the Eastern and Western sectors.

With the expected high crop intakes after Diwali, Plantations are advised to ensure that there is tight rein on the leaf standards in order to produce teas of an acceptable product quality. If this is not achieved, particularly with the wide preference of teas that will be on offer, we could see price differentiation between the best and the below best teas on offer.

The bidding in the Ex- Estate catalogue comprising of 1.09 Mkgs, for high grown small leaf tea, commenced on a hesitant note. The buyers being selective were seemingly unsure of the demand across the sale room. As the sale progressed, there was more activity particularly from the Russian interest. The buyers were eager to secure the better teas on offer and the leading buyers of liquoring teas were seen to bid actively. Consequently, a fair range of BOPs and BOPFs were firm but many others lost ground. Russian interest continued to be the dominant factor. Colombo prices for the best teas on offer are much higher than the best CTC PF1 teas in Mombasa. For the second consecutive week in Mombasa, prices have averaged below Two US dollars. Hence, no sooner the demand from Russia slows down, there will be a downward pressure on prices and an increase in quantity or a drop in quality will aggravate the situation.
