Enjoy and experience the beauty of creating art from your perspective. Join world-renowned artist, author and teacher SUSAN SCHEEWE as she shares her excitement for painting floral and landscapes with watercolors and acrylics. Sue’s natural talent and skills are presented in a step-by-step approach which allows you to follow, find your own pace, and hone your skills as you learn the techniques of layering, creating depth, tapping and adding texture while exploring the pleasures of painting. Following are program titles with a brief description.

Show #1101 SWEETNESS OF STARGAZER LILIES - Enchanting blooms of the Stargazer Lily unfurl with their sweet fragrance and permeate the air. It is a fun task to pick a favorite color among the allure of opaque white, pink, yellow, and deep magenta. The Lily’s beauty with a variety of colors provides a wonderful subject.

Show #1102 MORNING GLOW -The brilliance of the morning sun creates the backdrop for this delightful painting. Greeting cards or any size canvas that can be painted by varying and adjusting the size of the brushes to the size of the project. Paintings, like great treasures, often come in small sizes and make a wonderful gift to send to a family member or friend.

Show #1103 SPRING BLOSSOMS - Bring a touch of spring into your home to enjoy all year long. Blossoms of tulips, primroses and narcissi, can be painted using delicate hues or bright jewel tones the choice is yours. Paint the same subject several times for gift giving by creating and customizing accent colors to meet your friends’ tastes. Watercolors allow you to build layers by allowing the translucent quality of the watercolor’s pigments to create colors that are different from mixed colors.

One of Susan’s favorite flowers, the geranium, provides inspiration and creativity as she gazes out of her window. Geranium blossoms require the application of pigment layers to achieve depth and variation in hues.

Show #1108 GARDEN HAT - A garden provides endless inspiration for painting. One may overlook a charming garden hat, which is the perfect subject to paint with watercolors. By varying ever so slightly, the dark pigments contrast can be achieved while “tapping” provides texture a look you want for objects like hats. This is a great painting to share with children.

Show #1109WINTER FROSTING - The stunning beauty of nature’s winter wonderland is captured on canvas. Lush trees and majestic mountains covered in sparkling snow is a delight to paint. A large brush is a necessity. By using the technique of “spattering” we capture the look of dry leaves in the snow.

Show #1116BERRY SEASON - Blueberries and clay pots make a charming painting. Watercolor adds layers or glazes of color because it dries lighter, while acrylics dry darker than they appear when wet. Capture the natural tones of half ripe berries, green and some pink, while the rest are deep, rich blue and ready to pop in your mouth. What an awesome chance to experiment with color!

Depending on the framing and matting, the crepe paper appearance (texture) of the flowers and their large centers make them worthy of a significant place of display.

Show #1118 STONE FENCE - An old rock fence is so charming and a perfect subject to paint. Building layers is an important application of watercolors. As you apply one layer over another it allows the translucent quality of the watercolor pigments to create colors different from mixed colors. By diluting the layers to establish transparent glazes it produces a stained glass effect.

Show #1119 DIMENSIONAL SUNFLOWERS - The bold and bright colors of sunflowers offer great inspiration and a sense of summer’s warmth. Advance your skills and techniques by painting this beautiful floral subject. This painting is an excellent lesson in creating depth and texture.

Show #1123 SUMMERGARDEN - Susan’s home is Portland, Oregon the city of roses. Rose gardens dart the urban landscape and provide beauty for all to enjoy. This painting titled, “SummerGarden” recounts wonderful memories of walking through Monet’s gardens. Susan recommends taking reference photos to provide focus for painting now for inspiration later.

Selection of the right materials and brushes are essential as the options are many. As a variation, lightly sketch or transfer a pattern onto different surfaces such as canvas or wood. And, if painting on wood, learn what materials and prep works best.
