Meeting called to order by Bob Rosen; Hauck/Cipriano motion to accept the minutes of the April 5th meeting.
Chair-Elect – Rosen amended the agenda to include voting for the new chair-elect, as outlined in the Operations Board Procedures agreement. The group had informally agreed last July that the new seats would be taken alphabetically; CA is the current, DF is the chair-elect, thus the next chair-elect will be Fort Atkinson. Cipriano/Dalzin motion to use the alphabetical system, and to amend the Op Board Procedures document to reflect this method of selecting a new chair. clarify duties for the incoming President and the new chair-elect. Polmolik / Zaspel will begin their tenures at the June meeting.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
JEDI Awards – Presentations have been made or have been scheduled for JEDI Teachers.
Textbooks –MATC textbooks must be purchased by all receiving schools.
Virtual Field Trips – Lake Mills Middle School is piloting a Virtual Field Trip in May. Terri Tinsley plans to ask the Executive Board to fund one virtual field trip per district from this year’s remaining JEDI budget. The trip can be taken anytime during the 2001-02 school year.
Graduation Test – The Graduation Test discussion to be held over the JEDI Network was cancelled due to lack of interest.
JEDI Web Page - The index page of the JEDI website was revamped.
FYI – The state has received applications for forty new video links. These are either new rooms or additional Distance Education Rooms in K-12 schools. Thus, distance ed is still growing in WI.
Chancellor Meeting – There is a meeting with Chancellor Miller, UW Whitewater, scheduled
for June 19, 2001 with the Executive Board. Please share topics you’d like addressed at this meeting with the Exec board.
Gateway Progress – Tinsley updated the board on the progress of the Gateway. There are two impeding issues at this time: No ability to do simultaneous connections, and an audio feedback issue. The simultaneous connection issue requires a software re-write from Charter and a possible software re-write on the Todd Communications side of the Gateway. The DOA and Charter are discussing this. The audio feedback issue could be the result of not using echo cancellers or due to the poor microphone status in the JEDI rooms; Charter/Ameritech is working on this as well. Due to the abused state of many mics within JEDI rooms, Tinsley recommends replacing the microphones with an “always on” small mountable desktop unit. The group agreed replacing the mics with leftover JEDI budget dollars would be money very well spent.
Scheduling - Bob Rosen
Checklist of questions (updates will be shared in email):
1. Lake Mills will provide an additional hour of German. It is necessary for us
to take advantage of this opportunity. There will be some shifting to accommodate
class sizes and this new section being offered.
2. Intro to Criminal Justice – There will be two sections of Criminal Justice offered.
3. Jefferson is still resolving its problem with sending French I while wanting to receive
Psych of Human Relations. French will be offered by Jefferson and they are still
looking for solutions for the students wanting to take Psych of Human Relations.
Polycom Demo – Midwest Visual
Midwest Visual vendors used CESA 2’s polycom to connect with DPI, to demonstrate what a Polycom unit can do. Tom Rebholz, Keith Ehlert and Scott Schwartz from Midwest Visual demoed how this equipment works and outlined what possible benefits may be had by
school districts wishing to purchase this technology. They also discussed desktop video. After a long discussion period, there was concensus among the group that the cost for this technology outweighed the benefits, and the use of this type of technology might still require a person who could help the student connect the parts and maintain the equipment, which would negate the “saving money by using technology instead of sending a live human to the site”.
