Funding
Hogg Foundation for Mental Health – Special Mental Health Service Initiative. Co-principal Investigator. (May 2005 – May 2006). $51,400 awarded funds were used to support the UTB/TSC Community Counseling Clinic.
Scholarship of Community Engagement - Faculty Mini-grants (Fall 2005 and Spring 2006). UTB/TSC Center for Civic Engagement. Total of $1,500 in funds supported the Buena Vida Compassion Center Wellness Clinic which offered direct counseling services to the residents of the Buena Vida community via a Group Counseling practicum requirement for graduate students in the UBT Counseling & Guidance Program.

Teaching
Introduction to Marriage and Family Therapy: Introduces students to the study of individual and family development, family dynamics, interpersonal relationships and marriage and family systems. Selected theories, methods, and techniques of marriage and family therapy are included. Emphasis on multicultural issues.
Group Counseling: Develops an understanding of group processes, theories, and techniques. Demonstrated competence in this knowledge and applying group procedures is required.
Psycho-Educational Assessment: Explores the theory and techniques of administering, scoring, and interpreting educational and psychological tests. Includes test selection, administration, and the dynamics of test interpretation to enable the counselor to synthesize, integrate, and evaluate appraisal data for use in guidance and counseling.

Licensed Professional Counselor Intern, UTB/TSC Community Counseling Clinic, Brownsville, TX (October, 2004 – present): Provide therapy for clients in the local community with a particular focus on couples and families.
Clinical Counselor, Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, TX (August, 2003 – present): Provide therapy for undergraduate students who are part of the Campus Assistance Migrant Program. Particular attention was paid to issues of self-concept, ethnic identity, interpersonal relationships/conflict, transition to higher education, stress management and coping skills. Develop and facilitate psychoeducational workshops regarding study skills, time management, and conflict resolution.
School Psychology Pre-doctoral Intern, Dallas Independent School District, Dallas, TX (August, 2002-July 2003): Conducted direct counseling services to elementary and secondary students regarding academic, behavioral and emotional concerns. This included consultation with parents, teachers and administrators. Additionally, conducted assessments to determine learning disability and emotional disturbance. Participated in crisis counseling and crisis management on individual and school-wide basis.
Counseling & Consultation Services, University of Wisconsin-Madison
(September, 1998-May, 1999): Provided therapy for college aged population working with variety of issues including depression, anxiety, career counseling and relationship difficulties.
Catholic Charities, San Antonio, TX (May, 1997-August, 1997): Primarily treated couples and families with relationship difficulties with a particular emphasis on conflict resolution. The clients were primarily Latino, however, a significant proportion of the clientele were also involved in mixed ethnic or racial marriages or relationships.
Charter Real Behavioral Health System, Child and Adolescent unit (in-patient), San Antonio, TX (December, 1996-May, 1997): Responsible for co-leading daily groups for children and adolescents primarily dealing with substance abuse, suicidal ideation, and depression. This also included co-facilitating a weekly family group compromised of past and current
adolescent patients and their parents.
Shertz-Cibilo Independent School District, San Antonio, TX (September,
1996-May, 1997): Provided therapy for emotionally disturbed, primarily rural & ethnically diverse junior high and elementary school students. Also served as a consultant for teachers working with these children.
Any Baby Can, San Antonio, TX (May, 1996-December, 1996): Primarily treated school-aged children and adolescents with mental and physical disabilities. This included an emphasis on play therapy and a capability to work with children on medication. This work also included working with the families and parents of children and infants with disabilities. Therapeutic concerns primarily related to issues of living with and adjusting to life with mentally and physically disabled children and infants.
Community Counseling Service, San Antonio, TX (May 1996-August, 1997): Worked with a predominately low-income, urban Latino population for individual, couples and family therapy at a community mental health setting. This included serving on a Spanish-speaking therapy team.
Psychoeducational Practice
Counselor, Ronald E. McNair Program, University of Wisconsin-Madison (November, 1997- July, 2002): Assisted in coordinating and maintaining a pre-doctoral program for first-generation, low-income and underrepresented undergraduates. This included career and academic planning and advising. There was a special focus on the graduate school application process and professional development for the undergraduate McNair scholars.
Coordinator, Letters & Science Experience in Research (LASER), University of Wisconsin-Madison (November, 1997- September, 1998): Coordinated a research program for underrepresented college students. Facilitated weekly seminars which guided the students’ research. Instructed students in basic research skills for their required research project to prepare them for graduate education.
Case Manager, Communities in School, San Antonio, TX (August, 1996- May, 1997): Responsible for educational enhancement, behavior modification and counseling at an inner-city, primarily Mexican-American junior high school. Required collaboration with school teachers, administrators and students’ parents.
