MAN V12-1650 marine engine – designed to suit new trend in yachts

More comfort and smoother running – with its 1,650 hp (1,213 kW)12-cylinder V engine MAN is catering for the latest trend in the higher power segment.

At the "boot 2012" show in DüsseldorfMAN will be presenting its V12-1650 marine engine for yachts and pleasurecraft in the 50 to 100-foot class. With its 12 cylinders and 1,650 hp (1,213 kW)it closes the gap in the upper power segment between the V12 rated at 1,550 hp(1,140 kW) and the top-rated 12-cylinder unit with 1,800 hp (1,324 kW).At only 2,400 kg the low weight of the V12-1650 ensures an excellent weight-to-power ratio of 1.45 kg perhpand thus maximum efficiency in marine operation.

High pulling power and low noise

The V12-1650 is the ideal engine for yacht owners who are looking to cruise in comfort and above all to cover longer distances overnight. The reason for this is its maximum torque of 5,520 Nm, which is available at speeds even as low as 1,200 rpm. This strong-pulling engine thus unites sufficient power in the low speed range with extremely smooth running at medium cruising speeds. The second-generation common-rail direct injection system also has an extremely positive effect on the quietness of the engine and, beside superb acceleration, yields comfortable cruising and efficient fuel consumption.

Compactness and easy maintenance

MANyacht engines are well known for their compact dimensions and thus give architects and boat-builders a good deal of room for manoeuvre. The V12-1650 merges well into the array of space-saving engines and features convincingly compact dimensions of 1,667 x 1,150 x 1,350 mm (length x width x height). MAN's engineers have achieved this by, among other things, using a weight- and space-saving SAE1 flywheel housing. One advantage for installation of the engine at the boat-builders is the exhaust system, which has one central outlet. The water pump is driven by a gear instead of a V-belt, which considerably reduces the maintenance effort. Beside this all parts requiring servicing, such as fuel and oil filters, are so efficiently positioned in the V12-1650 that they are easily accessible from the centre gangway.

Power and classification

With the V12-1650 MAN Engines & Components is extending its range of classifiable engines in the upper rating range for light-duty applications. Classification of engines and other components is a pre-requisite for use in charter yachts and requires special constructional modifications on the engine such as leak-proof injection lines and double filters.

MAN's engine range for yachts and pleasurecraft

For yachts and pleasurecraft in the 50 to 100-foot classes MAN offers powerful, compact diesel engines with ratings from 730 hp (537 kW) to 1,800 hp (1,324 kW). A characteristic feature of all MAN engines is their powerful acceleration coupled with an extremely low fuel consumption. The advantages of the V engines in the rating range from 900hp (662 kW) to 1,800 hp (1,324 kW) are to be found above all in their outstanding power efficiency and compactness. The engines are delivered ready for installation and designed for optimum performance in the various conditions of deployment and operation. After installation MAN offers to examine and pass off the engine and to carry out extensive commissioning. The Gold Standard certificate for this inspection gives the boat owner an additional warranty. All engines meet the valid international exhaust-gas regulations.

V12-1650 at boot 2012
