Programme Outline

Miss Manners would like to tell a story aboutthe Giant, a big man who was once very selfish, and three children,Joyce, Edmund and Steven.In the story, the Giant learns to be a good host. He writes an invitation to his guests. He prepares food and drinks before the party and practises speaking politely. However, the childrenget too excited about playing at the party. They behave badly by askingthe Giant many nosy questions and touchingthe things they should not touch.Do you knowhow a guest should behave at a party? Suggested Activities

1.Ask pupils if they know how to be a good host and a good guest at parties. Brainstorm ideas.

2. Briefly introduce the story and the characters: the Giant, Edmund, Joyce and Steven.

3. Distribute COPYMASTER 1 Read and Say to pupils. Replay the segment where the Giant welcomes the childrenat the gate. Ask pupils to practise the dialogue in groups of four, with one as the host and the rest as the guests and then act out the scene.

5. Besides knowing how to speak politely, a good host has to know how to write invitations. In COPYMASTER 2a,pupils write an invitation cardto Mr Giant, inviting him to a barbecue party at SandyBay. Remind pupils to fill in the necessary information such as place, time and date before signing their names.Teacher can replay the segment where Joyce writes an invitation to Mr Giant.

6.After going to a party, it is considered good manners for a guest to write a thank-you note to the host. To familiarize pupils with this form of writing, guidethemin reading a thank you note written by Mr Giant in COPYMASTER 2b and tell them toput the phrases and sentences in the correct order.
