Biography

Dr. Ashwin Deshmukh graduated from Princeton University in 1991 with Honors in Chemistry and a Certificate at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public Policy, where he won the 1991 Woodrow Wilson Award. He was subsequently accepted to Harvard Medical School and graduated in 1995. He did his surgical internship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and his orthopedic surgery training at the Harvard Combined Orthopedics Program.

Dr. Deshmukh has won numerous international awards for his research in orthopedic surgery including the Neer Award by the Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society, the Perry Award by the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation society, and the Kilfoyle award by the New England Orthopaedic Society.

From 2001 to 2011, Dr. Deshmukh was a partner physician at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, where he assumed leadership roles on several initiatives including Osteoporosis prevention, implementation of the Electronic Medical Record, and initiatives to improve patient service. He was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award in 2011.

Dr. Deshmukh is an expert reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Medical Services Team, and the American Pain Society.

In 2012 Dr. Deshmukh was recruited to United Family Healthcare, where he served as Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. At UFH he developed an international standard orthopedic program and led the Sports Medicine Clinic, providing expert advice and care for people from all backgrounds—weekend athletes, busy executives and others just trying to stay healthy, as well as many well-known professional and Olympic athletes.

Dr. Deshmukh brings extensive clinical experience in treating sports injuries, back and neck pain, arthritis, and trauma. He is an expert at minimally-invasive arthroscopy techniques, joint reconstructions, pain management, musculoskeletal ultrasound, new diagnostic techniques, and other non-surgical options. In 2012, Dr. Deshmukh introduced MRI arthrography to UFH, for more accurate diagnosis of problems in the joints.

Dr. Deshmukh served as Tournament Physician for the Rolex Masters ATP 1000 Tennis Tournament. He served as the orthopaedic lead for curriculum development for both the United Family Healthcare Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine fellowship programs, and serves as an instructor for these programs.

Dr. Deshmukh’s record of exceptional service has continued during his time at UFH. Since 2013, he has been recognized in China as a “Top Doctor” by the International SOS medical relief organization. In 2014, he was the inaugural winner of the Specialist of the Year Award by the Center of Excellence in Primary Care. In 2015 he was named the inaugural winner of the Teacher of the Year award by the Family Medicine Fellowship training program.
