Introduction
South Asian Management Forum (SAMF) is a biannual conference organized by the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA). The Forum aims to provide a platform to bring together academicians, scholars, practicing managers and students of management and business of South Asian countries and exchange views and experiences on various issues in business and management. North South University (NSU) is hosting the 9th SAMF 2006 to be held in Dhaka on 24-25 February 2007. The last conference was held in Lahore, Pakistan in 2004 which was jointly hosted by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and Association of Management Development Institutions in Pakistan.
The theme of the9thSAMF 2006 is “Management for Peace, Prosperity and Posterity.” We received over 120 papers focusing on a variety of topics from Australia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand and U.K. and 80 of them have been finally selected for presentation at the conference. The conference will be held at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel. There will be 20 concurrent sessions with four papers to be presented in each session. Concurrent sessions will be presided over by famous academic/research scholars from the participating countries.
Apart from concurrent session chairs, we expect a number of internationally renowned academic scholars and corporate practitioners who will present keynote papers and participate in plenary sessions. The papers presented at the conference will focus on contemporary business issues and suggest strategies to deal with them successfully. Participants will benefit immensely from the deliberations at the conference.
Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia(AMDISA)
The Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA), was established in 1988 with the support of Commonwealth Secretariat, ILO INTERMAN, CIDA and leading management schools in South Asia. Its mission is to promote management excellence in South Asia by networking management development institutions and facilitating their partnership with corporate enterprises and public agencies in the region.
It has 188 institutional members from seven South Asian countries and 15 reciprocal members from other parts of the world. It has organized a series of Faculty Development Workshops on frontier areas of management, three South Asian Management Colloquia and eight South Asian Management Forums - the biannual academic conference where over 1500 academics and business leaders from South Asian countries and other parts of the world have participated. Based on the outcome of the Workshops, Colloquia and Forums, AMDISA has published 18 scholarly books besides several collections of Management Cases. It publishes AMDISA Newsletter every 4 months for its members and a quarterly Journal titled ‘South Asian Journal of Management’ which is subscribed by libraries across the world.
It is the only association which networks management development centers across seven nations and promotes partnership between business schools, business leaders and policy administrators for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of management education in South Asia. AMDISA provides multiple ways by which member-institutions collaborate within the region.
AMDISA also provides professional development opportunities for management faculty through Regional Fellowship and other programmes. It also provides institution building assistance to business schools and corporate management development centers through its Quality Assessment and other programmes.
AMDISA’s administrative structure includes the General Assembly of members held every two years, which elects an Executive Board. It has eleven members representing all member nations. The Presidentship of the Board rotates every two years among the South Asian member institutions. Its immediate past President is an invitee to the Board.
Its permanent secretariat, located in Hyderabad, India, is headed by an Executive Director and supported by Director, Research and a lean staff. While the secretariat serves the membership and initiates activity plans, its activities are hosted by member institutions in different countries of South Asia. The secretariat houses a library and a documentation centre, and is equipped to organize meetings and seminars. The Secretariat will shortly be relocated in its own premises on the University of Hyderabad campus, India.
AMDISA is recognized by the SAARC Secretariat, as an apex professional association with active chapters in all member countries.
NorthSouthUniversity
North South University (NSU), the first private university in Bangladesh, was established by the NSU Foundation. The government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of NorthSouthUniversity in 1992 under Private University Act (PUA) 1992. It was formally inaugurated on February 10, 1993 by Begum Khaleda Zia, Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The President of People’s Republic of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of NSU.
From a modest beginning with 137 students in 1993 the student body has now grown to approximately 6500. NSU has the largest Business school in the country with 5058 students in the BBA, MBA and EMBA programs. Following an American model the school offers Masters and Bachelors degree in Business Administration having concentrations in Management, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, MIS, HRM, International Business, and Business Policy and Strategy.
The MBA program has been designed following the guidelines of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the highest accreditation body of business schools in USA. It is global, computer oriented, fast track, and competitively priced. The BBA degree is offered with choice of majors in Marketing, International Business, Management Information System (MIS), Human Resource Management, Business Policy and Strategy, Finance and Accounting.
Good students and good faculty are the two main ingredients of a good university. NSU is very selective about both the ‘ingredients’. NSU has highly qualified faculty members. All faculty members are educated andtrained in North American or equivalent universities.
NSU has produced a total of 2109 graduates among which 1093 are BBA and 280 are MBA. Most of these graduates are employed in both nationally and internationally reputed companies. Many are pursuing higher education in renowned universities abroad.
In 13 years, NSU has established itself as a citadel of excellence and has been making a relentless effort to produce the best graduates and subject experts in the country. NSU has fiveprofessional and research wings: (i) Institute of Development, Environment and Strategic Studies (IDESS) (ii) The English Institute (iii) The Confucius Institute (iv) Center for Information & Communication Technology (CICT) and (v) Department of Career and Professional Development Services (CPDS).
