“Making my own mark…naturally!”

Young children's mark making is increasingly recognised as a powerful tool forthinking and learning across all curriculum areas. Using photographic material from Wingate Nursery School, Paddy will develop an awareness and understanding ofthe components of a rich and enabling environment for mark making and early writing. The aim of the seminar is to :

> explore the potential for mark making within a stimulating, appropriate, emotionally and physically rich environment, that is well resourced and wellorganised, with particular focus on the play needs of boys

identify the role of the adult in offering rich and meaningful opportunities for children to explore and develop their emerging mark making

> establish the link between confident mark makers and competent communicators, both orally and on paper, in all areas of learning

Paddy Beels is the retired Head of Wingate Community Nursery School in County Durham. Paddy is an early years educator whose 30 years teaching spans primary and nursery children in the UK and Jamaica and work with adults in a wide range of settings. She believes strongly in the role of parents and the community in the education of young children and the potentially powerful influence that their mutual relationships with teachers can have on children’s learning. In 1999 she won the national Teaching Award for Working with Parents and the Community and was awarded the OBE in 2000.

Paddy is dedicated to “childhood” and has researched early childhood education in Denmark, Italy and Florida. She believes passionately in the importance of respecting children’s own thinking and of offering them the freedom of outdoor play and experiences, uninhibited by adult-imposed agendas.
